A good feeling to get it done, the Bhoys icon said.

“It’s weird because you spend the last five years, seven years of your football career, starting to plan, think what you want to do. Until you’re actually in it and doing it, you don’t know what you’re getting yourself in for.

“The truth is, I didn’t enjoy it. I didn’t enjoy all of it. It was only part-time, so I think to myself, you go into a career and you want to get to the best, you want to go as high as you can.

“So I think if I’d gone full-time, how would I feel? I couldn’t think of anything worse now than becoming a full-time manager.”

Mulgrew had doubts early on about life as a manager

11 weeks is a short time – even for a football manager. Three weeks is an even shorter time to realise you’ve made a mistake.

But, the former Hoops defender wasn’t afraid to admit that he knew the manager’s life wasn’t right for him early doors.

He added: “It’s not until maybe three or four weeks before I actually resigned where I started to question ‘now you know what the job is, are you enjoying it?’

“There’s hard times in every job, we’ve all come through a football career where you remember the good times but there so many hard times.

“I had to weigh up whether, is it something that I want long term? Best case scenario, in 20 years, do I want to go in 20 years and life this life for 20 years?

Charlie Mulgrew has opened up on his first foray into management after his sudden departure.
