\n A presentation on fly-tipping was given to the place services scrutiny committee by the council\u2019s director of operations Trevor Nicoll last Tuesday.\n<\/p>\n
\n He stated there were around 1,700 reports of fly-tipping last year.\n<\/p>\n
\n Mr Nicoll said the \u201crevenue cost\u201d of \u201ccleaning that up\u201d totals around \u00a390,000 in staff time and vehicles, and about another \u00a375,000 in disposing of the waste.\n<\/p>\n
\n He highlighted that the council \u201cgot rid of\u201d 539 tonnes of waste.\n<\/p>\n
\n Cllr Derek Long highlighted that the number of fly-tipping incidents amount to 33 a week, five a day \u2013 including Saturdays and Sundays.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cIt looks like we\u2019re doing a tonne of waste every week, more than a tonne of waste every week,\u201d said Cllr Long.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cWe\u2019re doing the best we can and I\u2019m hoping that there will be improved focus on this from the executive.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
\n Raising concerns over the number of fly-tipping incidents, Cllr Long says it is \u201cnot supportable\u201d.\n<\/p>\n
\n Mr Nicoll highlighted that the figures relate to public land \u2013 before stating the number is likely bigger, as there will also be incidents on private land.\n<\/p>\n
\n Cllr Long said the issue of fly-tipping is a country-wide one.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cThis is the nature of the society that we are living in, it is not just St Helens, it is across the country,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n
\n Cllr Long says it is \u201cgoing up\u201d and described it as \u201cself-inflicted damage\u201d.\n<\/p>\n
\n He called on residents to phone in to report fly-tipping incidents.\n<\/p>\n
\n Cllr Long said that \u201cit is essential that, as a society, we are all collectively against this\u201d and that the \u201cdisinfectant for this is information\u201d.\n<\/p>\n
