{"id":249794,"date":"2025-07-09T04:17:16","date_gmt":"2025-07-09T04:17:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/249794\/"},"modified":"2025-07-09T04:17:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T04:17:16","slug":"cameron-norrie-called-out-by-john-mcenroe-over-weird-behaviour-during-defeat-to-carlos-alcaraz-at-wimbledon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/249794\/","title":{"rendered":"Cameron Norrie called out by John McEnroe over &#8216;weird behaviour&#8217; during defeat to Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Cameron Norrie was keen to show off his Duolingo skills during his defeat to Carlos Alcaraz, but John McEnroe was not a fan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The British star&#8217;s quarter-final clash against two-time <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/topic\/wimbledon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wimbledon<\/a> champ <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/who\/carlos-alcaraz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alcaraz<\/a> did not get off to the greatest of starts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Norrie was up against it from the get-go against the reigning Wimbledon champion\" height=\"640\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"AFP via Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/SPO_2223525945jpg-JS1008499608.jpg\" data-caption=\"Norrie was up against it from the get-go against the reigning Wimbledon champion\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/SPO_2223525945jpg-JS1008499608.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3<\/p>\n<p>Norrie was up against it from the get-go against the reigning Wimbledon championCredit: AFP via Getty<\/p>\n<p>Alcaraz, who eased to a straight-sets victory over the 29-year-old, was in cruise control throughout the opening set as he stormed to a 6-2 lead.<\/p>\n<p>The Spaniard was once again dominant early in the second set and went ahead 3-1.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing that there was a serious risk of Alcaraz running away with the contest, Norrie tried to inject some energy into the crowd and himself when his rival fired a shot beyond the baseline.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the applause, <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/who\/cameron-norrie\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Norrie<\/a> bellowed out &#8216;vamos&#8217;, which translates to &#8216;let&#8217;s go&#8217; in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>Norrie&#8217;s shout was met by surprise from McEnroe on commentary duties.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Was that Norrie saying &#8216;vamos?'&#8221; McEnroe said.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;It&#8217;s weird for a guy that was born in South Africa, grew up in New Zealand and is a Brit, that he&#8217;s saying vamos.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fans on social media shared a similar stance to McEnroe.<\/p>\n<p>One X user wrote: &#8220;Norrie why are you saying vamos? You&#8217;re not Spanish!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another said: &#8220;Alcaraz is too good, Norrie saying vamos, seriously!?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Brit's time at SW19 for this year's tournament came to an end\" height=\"540\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"AFP via Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/crop-3360257.jpg\" data-caption=\"The Brit's time at SW19 for this year's tournament came to an end\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/crop-3360257.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3<\/p>\n<p>The Brit&#8217;s time at SW19 for this year&#8217;s tournament came to an endCredit: AFP via Getty<\/p>\n<p>A third added: &#8220;John McEnroe calling out Norrie for shouting vamos and rightly so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, Norrie revealed in his post-match press conference the reason he yells out vamos is because his coach, Facundo Lugones, is from Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>Norrie also claimed he had been saying vamos throughout the entire tournament.<\/p>\n<p>It ultimately mattered for nought though, as Alcaraz cruised to a 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 victory.<\/p>\n<p>Although Alcaraz rarely needed to go through the gears on Centre Court, he was still full of praise for Norrie.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am really happy. No one works harder than him and it is nice to see him fighting for great things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Although Alcaraz evidently let Norrie&#8217;s brief flirtation with the Spanish language slide, <a href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/tennis\/2226499\/cameron-norrie-tennis-atp-tour-carballes-baena-win-moselle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another Spaniard on tour was less receptive.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last November, Norrie fought from a set and break down to beat Roberto Carballes Baena in Metz, but things got heated in the aftermath during the post-match handshake.<\/p>\n<p>The Spaniard appeared annoyed with Norrie for repeatedly saying &#8216;vamos&#8217; to motivate himself throughout the comeback.<\/p>\n<p>He said to his rival: \u201cYou\u2019re saying \u2018come on\u2019 all the time, [while] looking in my face. You didn\u2019t need to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nick Kyrgios says Carlos Alcaraz knows he&#8217;s right deep down after &#8216;girls and parties&#8217; retort<\/p>\n<p>An unmoved Norrie replied: \u201cA couple of \u2018vamos\u2019 and you get p***** off?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carballes Baena fired back: \u201cA couple of \u2018vamos\u2019? No!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You said \u2018vamos\u2019, looking in my face.
