Meanwhile, quantum mechanics has charted a path through the perplexing world of the subatomic, producing the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.cern\/science\/physics\/standard-model\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:standard model of particle physics;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">standard model of particle physics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg that should bring the two worlds together is a theory of quantum gravity (along with the discovery of its force carrier, the graviton). The absence of this piece could also explain why general relativity breaks down at the singularity of black holes. Of course, unified theories such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/deep-space\/a64410292\/string-theory-dark-energy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:string theory;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">string theory<\/a> attempt to solve this mystery, but conclusive evidence remains elusive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a search for answers, Xavier Calmet from the University of Sussex\u2014along with colleagues Andrea Giusti and Marco Sebastianutti\u2014calculated black-hole solutions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a42736230\/is-quantum-gravity-real\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:quantum gravity;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">quantum gravity<\/a> with the information they knew and worked backward from there. These quantum gravitational corrections to Einstein\u2019s equations are detailed in a paper published in <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1209\/0295-5075\/ade39d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:A Letters Journal Exploring the Frontiers of Physics;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">A Letters Journal Exploring the Frontiers of Physics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhile we do not yet have a theory of quantum gravity, we know that whatever this theory might be, string theory or something completely different, it must match general relativity on macroscopic scales,\u201d Calmet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/black-holes\/this-is-the-holy-grail-of-theoretical-physics-is-the-key-to-quantum-gravity-hiding-in-this-new-way-to-make-black-holes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:told Space.com;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">told Space.com<\/a>. \u201cThis information is sufficient when using modern methods in quantum field theory to perform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/technology\/robots\/a35267508\/humans-cant-contain-superintelligent-machines\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:calculations;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">calculations<\/a> in quantum gravity without needing the full knowledge of the underlying theory of quantum gravity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Calmet started working earnestly on quantum gravity black holes when he arrived at the University of Sussex in 2009. In 2022, Calmet\u2014along with an international team of scientists\u2014developed a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/deep-space\/a43519907\/black-hole-paradox-stephen-hawking-finally-solved\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:quantum hair;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">quantum hair<\/a>\u201d theory, which states that matter collapsing into a black hole imprints information on its gravitational field. In doing so, he and his team showed this could be a possible solution to the long-standing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/deep-space\/a63191208\/black-hole-paradox-test\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Black Hole Information Paradox;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Black Hole Information Paradox<\/a>, which grapples with the conflicting ideas that information is seemingly destroyed via Hawking radiation, despite the fact that this should be impossible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although this new paper provides mathematical evidence that there are quantum solutions to black holes, these techniques can\u2019t be applied close to the singularity because (as Calmet tells Space.com) a full understanding of quantum gravity would be required at that point. However, understanding that such <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/math\/a64729418\/polynomial-solution\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:solutions;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">solutions<\/a> exist provides evidence that a unified theory could one day be realized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt is nevertheless important to have shown that there are new black hole solutions in quantum gravity that do not exist in general relativity,\u201d Calmet told Space.com. \u201cThese new solutions are not just tweaks to the old one\u2014they\u2019re entirely new black holes that exist in a quantum gravity world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Photo credit:
