But the proposal would only bring the UK in line with most other European countries. EU law requires member states to allow asylum seekers to work after <a href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/sn01908\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nine months<\/a>, which will be reduced to six months next year.
