{"id":251740,"date":"2025-07-09T21:09:17","date_gmt":"2025-07-09T21:09:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/251740\/"},"modified":"2025-07-09T21:09:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T21:09:17","slug":"aberdeens-incinerator-shut-and-waste-diverted-to-landfill-amid-row-between-operators-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/251740\/","title":{"rendered":"Aberdeen&#8217;s incinerator shut and waste diverted to landfill amid row between operators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Aberdeen\u2019s incinerator is closed because of a conflict between its operators, with waste being diverted to landfill.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Indaver, headquartered in the Netherlands, operates the Energy from Waste (EFW) NESS facility for the three local authorities that use it \u2013 Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, and Moray \u2013 but is reconsidering its involvement with the project.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Indaver said: \u201cIndaver can confirm that, due to ongoing issues the company is experiencing in relation to its operations at the Ness waste-to-energy facility in Aberdeen, Scotland, the company is reviewing its future involvement in the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company will not be providing further comment at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The site has been closed since mid-June, initially for routine maintenance and remains closed for processing new waste.<\/p>\n<p>All non-recyclable waste is being sent to a landfill site in Peterhead.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson from the Aberdeen City Council said: \u201cDue to an issue between EFW Ness Ltd and its operating sub-contractor, the Ness Energy from Waste facility is currently closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWaste is being diverted to an alternative disposal facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResidents should continue to put their bins out as normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a3150m facility can process 150,000 tonnes of waste a year from its three council areas.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s thought the facility could be one of the last incinerators built in Scotland after a temporary ban was placed on building and approving new sites by the Scottish Government in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not yet clear when the site will reopen to process non-recyclable waste but it\u2019s believed the councils can recoup the costs from sending their waste elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>STV News is now on WhatsApp<\/p>\n<p>Get all the latest news from around the country<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029VaCESJzKgsNvKKNOYO2r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">      Follow STV News <\/a>Follow STV News on WhatsApp<\/p>\n<p>Scan the QR code on your mobile device for all the latest news from around the country<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/whatsapp-qr.png\" alt=\"WhatsApp channel QR Code\"\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Aberdeen\u2019s incinerator is closed because of a conflict between its operators, with waste being diverted to landfill.
