Stockport\u2019s council leader and Lib Dem MPs have issued an urgent warning about the conditions at \u2018crumbling\u2019 Stepping Hill Hospital.<\/p>\n

Coun Mark Roberts, who took over as leader of Stockport<\/a> town hall this year, said buildings at the hospital are not safe for staff and patients.<\/p>\n

He joined MPs Lisa Smart and Tom Morrison in calling for immediate action to address the problems.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe situation at Stepping Hill is simply not sustainable,\u201d Coun Roberts said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur amazing NHS<\/a> staff are doing everything they can in crumbling and unsafe buildings, it\u2019s not fair on them, and it\u2019s not fair on patients.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need urgent repairs now, but we also need to plan for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

The council leader called for new investment for a \u2018modern, centrally located healthcare facility\u2019 based near Stockport Interchange.<\/p>\n

Bosses at the Stockport NHS Foundation Trust said last year that the repair backlog at Stepping Hill had reached \u00a3134m<\/a>, and that it was struggling to manage the growing list of work required.<\/p>\n

The hospital, based about 2.5 miles from Stockport town centre, will get \u00a32.6m this year from the government\u2019s estates safety fund for essential safety works.<\/p>\n

In December 2024, construction work started on a new outpatient building<\/a> at Stepping Hill, backed by \u00a324.3m of funding.<\/p>\n

MPs Lisa Smart and Tom Morrison said Stockport needs a new health facility<\/a> located in the town centre.<\/p>\n

A petition calling for repairs and a new town-centre site was signed by more than 6,000 people and handed to 10 Downing Street, Stockport Lib Dems<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve spoken to staff working in flooded wards and patients worried about safety in ageing buildings,\u201d Cheadle<\/a> MP Tom Morrison said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis petition is a clear sign that our community is united, we need urgent funding for critical repairs, and we need a long-term plan for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hazel Grove<\/a> MP Lisa Smart said she recently met with health minister Karin Smyth about the future of the hospital.<\/p>\n

Ms Smart added: \u201cResidents are rightly worried about the state of Stepping Hill, and I\u2019ve heard from hundreds of people about the profound impact the hospital\u2019s condition is having on them and their families.<\/p>\n

\u201cI raised those concerns directly with the minister in our recent meeting and was heartened by her willingness to engage.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut warm words aren\u2019t enough, we now need concrete action, both to fix the hospital in the short term and to deliver a second site in the longer term.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2021, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust and Stockport council<\/a> shared plans for a new hospital facility based at the town’s former Debenhams store.<\/p>\n

A bid was made to fund this work from a \u00a33.7-billion programme for 40 new hospitals by 2030 under the former Conservative government – but Stepping Hill did not make the list.<\/p>\n

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: \u201cRepairing and rebuilding our healthcare estate is a vital part of our ambition to create an NHS fit for the future through our 10 Year Health Plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are investing \u00a330 billion over the next five years in day-to-day maintenance and repair of the NHS estate with over \u00a35bn allocated specifically to address the most critical building repairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis includes a \u00a3750 million boost this financial year, as an essential first step towards addressing the poorest quality estate across the NHS and ensuring a safe, sustainable healthcare environment.\u201d<\/p>\n
