{"id":25220,"date":"2025-04-16T16:39:25","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T16:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/25220\/"},"modified":"2025-04-16T16:39:25","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T16:39:25","slug":"cabot-circus-unveil-plans-for-large-health-centre-in-transformed-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/25220\/","title":{"rendered":"Cabot Circus unveil plans for large health centre in transformed street"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It could be home to a new health centre for the city<\/p>\n<p>13:37, 15 Apr 2025Updated 09:12, 16 Apr 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_philadelphia-street.jpg\" alt=\"Philadelphia Street in Bristol, which forms part of the Cabot Circus and Quakers Friars shopping centre\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Philadelphia Street in Bristol, which forms part of the Cabot Circus and Quakers Friars shopping centre(Image: Google Maps)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The owners of Cabot Circus want to radically transform the separate street of shops it owns in the city centre, and create an upstairs level which could be a large health centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Hammerson, the firm that owns Cabot Circus, has submitted two planning applications to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-city-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol City Council<\/a> that cover the separate Quakers Friars area of the shopping centre, which presently has designer fashion shops and the Apple store along Philadelphia Street. The Apple Store is to move out in August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">As well as a series of on-street improvements to the public spaces around the historic Quakers Friars, which will make it more of a destination for people to socialise with bars, cafes and restaurants, the biggest change will be in the buildings that contain the shops on the south side of Philadelphia Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">All the upstairs first floors will be separated from their downstairs stores and be merged into one large space. While the \u2018Masterplan\u2019 produced by the architects does not specify exactly what will be there, one plan mentions \u2018indicative healthcare use\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Broadmead Medical Centre above Boots in the city centre has been disrupted by ongoing building work there. In December, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a> bosses said they were \u2018working hard in the background to find additional premises\u2019, and face to face GP and nurse appointments are currently being made at the BS1 Surgery in Queen Charlotte Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Sign up to receive daily news updates and breaking news alerts straight to your inbox for free <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3r1T6AI\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"hereLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">With the plan to demolish The Galleries and build thousands of new homes in the city centre, the long term future of Broadmead Medical Centre is in doubt, and a larger or new health centre is something that will be needed. Hammerson\u2019s \u2018masterplan\u2019 for Quakers Friars appears to provide a space for this that could be created before the major upheaval of development at The Galleries, Debenhams and the Rupert Street.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_TCBR150425QuakersFriarsBRI_02JPG.jpg\" alt=\"Plans for a revamp of Quakers Friars and Philadelphia Street, which are part of the Cabot Circus shopping centre area\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Plans for a revamp of Quakers Friars and Philadelphia Street, which are part of the Cabot Circus shopping centre area(Image: Hammerson)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe Masterplan aims to revitalise Quakers Friars with a focus on diversity, happiness and resilience,\u201d said a spokesperson for the developers. \u201cThe Masterplan is a strategic initiative designed to revitalise Quakers Friars, emphasising the preservation of architectural heritage, fostering diversity, happiness, and resilience, and enhancing the quality of life through sustainable urban development,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The masterplan\u2019s \u2018design initiatives\u2019 are: creating a \u2018welcoming, intergenerational public space at the heart of Quakers Friars, \u2018serving as a focal point for the community and enriching the city centre with diverse event experiences, while honouring the buildings heritage setting\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Cloister Square will be transformed into an \u2018intimate space for performance and tranquillity, enriched by the cultural legacy of the Friary Building and complemented by proposed natural interventions, preserving the heritage of the space and creating space for outdoor events to be hosted.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_TCBR150425QuakersFriarsBRIJPG.jpg\" alt=\"Plans for a revamp of Quakers Friars and Philadelphia Street, which are part of the Cabot Circus shopping centre area\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Plans for a revamp of Quakers Friars and Philadelphia Street, which are part of the Cabot Circus shopping centre area(Image: Hammerson)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Philadelphia Street will be \u2018transformed into a vibrant public realm environment with \u2018urban rooms\u2019 for rest, play, and reflection\u2019.
