The warm glow from seeing Nico H\u00fclkenberg take a first Formula One podium in 239 attempts is helping, however.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m Alex, and Madeline Coleman will be along later.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Iversen has just flown back home to Texas, and while I\u2019ve stayed steady on London time all week, I\u2019m back as Tuesday host, with Pat again taking my slot on Friday. Normal service will resume next week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Lost Verstappen Victory?<\/strong><strong>How rain spoiled Red Bull\u2019s clever set-up tactics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I fully agree with Madeline saying \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6475928\/2025\/07\/07\/oscar-piastri-british-gp-penalty-f1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a case of \u2018what could\u2019ve been<\/a>\u2019\u201d about Oscar Piastri\u2019s 2025 British Grand Prix. One can make the same case for Lando Norris taking his trophy to celebrate with fans gathered on the Silverstone pit straight before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/formula-1\/2025\/07\/07\/lando-norris-nose-split-watch-injury-man-falls-silverstone\/?source=athletic_primetire_newsletter&amp;campaign=14074017\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a photographer essentially fell on his nose<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the same really applies to Max Verstappen\u2019s result last Sunday, too.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutchman delivered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6474838\/2025\/07\/05\/british-grand-prix-qualifying\/?source=athletic_primetire_newsletter&amp;campaign=14074017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another epic lap to claim pole<\/a> \u2014 running adrift of the Q3 pack and being all inevitably Thanos in sealing a fourth such grid-heading result of 2025. It was Suzuka-esque, and afterwards, I asked him how he feels when showing such searing speed at tracks that really show an F1 driver\u2019s class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s natural. (These are) tracks that I just enjoy more,\u201d Max replied. \u201cI don\u2019t like street circuits in general. I just like the high speeds, where you have to be committed. It\u2019s more flowing. That\u2019s really where an F1 car comes alive. Naturally, the car has to work with you, right? And we know that on this kind of track the car just comes alive a bit more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And this got me thinking: What other tracks have these Red Bull-boosting characteristics for the rest of the F1 calendar? Because, at these, Verstappen is surely going to be more than just a thorn in orange sidepods.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Spa<\/strong>. Verstappen won here in 2023 and 2024 when McLaren probably had the pace to prevail both times.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>. The long straights should favor Red Bull\u2019s car, but it is tires that will dictate the result. They did in 2024, when Mercedes was alone in really getting the rubber to work in cold November in Nevada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6478442 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-2223232866-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>      Verstappen\u2019s safety car restart spin dropped him from second to 10th, although he recovered to finish fifth (Rasid Necati Aslim\/Anadolu\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6465718\/2025\/07\/01\/max-verstappen-f1-title-chances\/?source=athletic_primetire_newsletter&amp;campaign=14074017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as discussed last week<\/a>, you can never count Max out of anything in F1.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s good enough to be in the fight at upcoming tracks where McLaren should dominate \u2014 in Hungary, the Netherlands and Singapore. But four tracks out of the remaining 12 where Red Bull could really nick more wins along the lines of Suzuka and Imola for Verstappen earlier this year isn\u2019t enough to overturn the now 69-point deficit he faces in the drivers\u2019 standings.<\/p>\n<p>So, what happened to Verstappen\u2019s Silverstone potential?<\/p>\n<p>In a word: rain.<\/p>\n<p>The Sunday morning and early afternoon showers at Silverstone meant Red Bull\u2019s skinny wing choice was exposed \u2014 and it was notable that Verstappen was fast in the drier start and end to the race. In the soaking middle, he was nowhere and furious about it.<\/p>\n<p>Red Bull had fitted its Monza wing to eradicate the understeer Verstappen hates that had held him back on single lap pace in practice. The weather forecast changing dramatically overnight on Saturday-Sunday left it stranded, as when it rains, bigger rear wings help drivers keep control of their cars with extra downforce effect.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Verstappen also made a second major error in this season \u2014 after his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6396003\/2025\/06\/01\/max-verstappen-potential-race-ban-spanish-grand-prix\/?source=athletic_primetire_newsletter&amp;campaign=14074017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain red mist moment<\/a>. He spun out of second at the safety car restart and had also been off the road in front of Norris before the first pitstops for the leaders. It was a rare poor mistake from the world champion, which he didn\u2019t feel was down to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6475928\/2025\/07\/07\/oscar-piastri-british-gp-penalty-f1\/?source=athletic_primetire_newsletter&amp;campaign=14074017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Piastri\u2019s penalty-earning safety car restart braking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just got on throttle and the car was gone,\u201d Verstappen said of his spin.<\/p>\n<p>Another team off the road and spinning around at Silverstone was Ferrari. Over to Madeline to explain what went wrong for Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc and co. last weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inside the Paddock with Madeline Coleman<\/strong><strong>Ferrari\u2019s \u2018difficult weekend\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ferrari\u2019s British GP was complicated. It\u2019d shown signs of strong competitive pace, and with Hamilton starting the race fifth, you couldn\u2019t rule him out of podium contention. After all, the seven-time world champion had previously secured 12 consecutive podium finishes at Silverstone, and he excels in wet conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The Ferrari drivers immediately diverged on strategy in the mixed-conditions race, where knowing when to swap intermediate tires for slicks (and which compound at that) was the key. Leclerc made the call to go from inters to slicks on the race\u2019s formation lap \u2014 giving up his sixth place to start from pit lane. He then had several off-track moments on the way to a bruising 14th.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s easy to say at the end that it was not the right call,\u201d Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur said afterwards. \u201cBut I think Charles (quickly) understood that it was not the right call because he was already five seconds slower than the guy in front of him (on the first lap).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hamilton\u2019s strategy, though, was the right one \u2014 inters, inters and softs. But because others such as H\u00fclkenberg and Lance Stroll pitted before him, they were able to jump ahead, though Hamilton later caught and passed Stroll<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s fair to wonder whether Hamilton\u2019s pit stop to finally take softs came too early. He pitted a lap before H\u00fclkenberg (who went on to secure his maiden F1 podium). But Hamilton\u2019s out lap wasn\u2019t clean, as he skidded off the track just after the pit lane exit and lost several seconds (with Leclerc also off in the background). The off aided H\u00fclkenberg in holding that coveted podium result, as Hamilton is still waiting for his first silverware in Ferrari red.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have to take the decision on the pit wall, it\u2019s a very tricky one because you always have to be in anticipation,\u201d Vasseur said. \u201cAnd on top, we lost the Lewis\u2019 GPS all the race. It meant that were completely blind and we didn\u2019t know where the car was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>H\u00fclkenberg Hailed<\/strong><strong>What Nico\u2019s rivals had to say<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>H\u00fclkenberg ending his 238-race-long F1 podium drought went down tremendously well in the paddock.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6475922\/2025\/07\/06\/f1-british-gp-nico-hulkenberg-podium-silverstone\/?source=athletic_primetire_newsletter&amp;campaign=14074017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke Smith explained<\/a>, Mercedes and Aston Martin \u2014 where the veteran made several super-sub appearances across its various guises at the start of this decade \u2014 were on hand to help Sauber with extra champagne for its surprise celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what a selection of H\u00fclkenberg\u2019s peers had to say about his result, with the German a popular figure amongst the F1 driver pack:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Max Verstappen<\/strong>: \u201cHe knows what he can do. He has shown that in the past, before F1 and in F1. But for whatever reason, it didn\u2019t work out up until now. So for sure he will take it and he will be very happy. But I think he knows how good he is anyway. A podium does not suddenly say that you are better. It\u2019s just really nice for him to at least be on the podium.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oscar Piastri<\/strong>: \u201cThe highlight of the day.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fernando Alonso<\/strong>: \u201cSuper happy for him. One of the best drivers on the grid and never had the opportunity to have a proper car underneath (him). I\u2019m very truly happy for him.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pierre Gasly<\/strong>: \u201cBeen a long time coming, so good for him.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alex Albon<\/strong>: \u201cWhat a legend.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gabriel Bortoleto<\/strong>: \u201cSeeing him fight for the podium and achieve this result after so many years in F1 means a lot.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carlos Sainz<\/strong>: \u201cFor me, he\u2019s always been a top-five driver in the grid every time he\u2019s been in F1 \u2013 his level of talent and race execution is incredible.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Charles Leclerc<\/strong>: \u201cCongratulations to Nico for his podium, it\u2019s a great achievement for him and his team.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6478449 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-2223832798-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1771\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>      H\u00fclkenberg is a popular figure at Aston Martin, after driving for the team full-time in two stints between 2012 and 2016, as well as stepping into its cars during the COVID-19 pandemic (Bryn Lennon\/Formula 1\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>H\u00fclk\u2019s result really enhanced the feel-good factor as the paddock was packing down at Silverstone. It\u2019s a huge achievement for a driver who was effectively shown the door on full-time F1 racing after the 2019 season.<\/p>\n<p>But he refused to accept his fate. He used his position as Racing Point\/Aston reserve driver (and occasional pundit on German TV) to badger Guenther Steiner into a full-time return with Haas for 2023. And H\u00fclkenberg used his time off in the meantime to think about how he could improve with rear tire sliding, which had held him back for years of sensitive Pirelli tires to such movement. Ever since, he\u2019s consistently lit up the midfield with magic results.<\/p>\n<p>H\u00fclk mark two is arguably better than his trophy-laden junior career and early F1 record showed. Now, he\u2019s got a headline result (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6475182\/2025\/07\/06\/f1-british-gp-lego-trophy\/?source=athletic_primetire_newsletter&amp;campaign=14074017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and plenty of Lego<\/a>) to prove it.<\/p>\n<p>Congrats, Nico.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outside the points<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udea8 Very much not deserving of points this, but Northamptonshire Police are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northants.police.uk\/news\/northants\/news\/appeals\/2025\/july\/cctv-theft-of-classic-f1-steering-wheel-at-silverstone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">appealing for assistance in catching a man<\/a> wanted in connection with the theft of a steering wheel from a classic F1 car on display at Silverstone. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-race.com\/formula-1\/thousands-of-pounds-of-damage-done-to-british-gp-classic-cars\/?source=athletic_primetire_newsletter&amp;campaign=14074017\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Other cars were sadly damaged, too<\/a>, with several YouTubers arrested over one incident.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83c\udfc6 In much more uplifting news \u2014 as Norris, Piastri and H\u00fclkenberg did on Sunday \u2014 here\u2019s the full story on those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6475182\/2025\/07\/06\/f1-british-gp-lego-trophy\/?source=athletic_primetire_newsletter&amp;campaign=14074017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intricate Lego trophies handed out on the Silverstone podium<\/a> via Luke.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udc68\u200d\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udc67\u200d\ud83d\udc67 And also at Silverstone, Madeline told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6473647\/2025\/07\/05\/williams-f1-history-frank-williams\/?source=athletic_primetire_newsletter&amp;campaign=14074017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the story of Williams<\/a> at the formerly family-run team\u2019s home event.
