The car park at the rear of the Broadwalk Shopping Centre has now reached the point where \u2018mitigation measures are now exhausted\u2019, and it must remain closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The centre, its car park, and the bingo hall and snooker hall on the same site will eventually be demolished &#8211; potentially as early as the end of next year &#8211; to make way for hundreds of new homes as part of a transformation into what the developers have called \u2018Redcatch Quarter\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The owners of the shopping centre have told Bristol Live how the end finally came for the car park, which was built in the early 1970s alongside the shops. And Broadside Holdings say they are now hoping to find alternative arrangements for people who park to use the local services in the shopping centre, which include a dentist&#8217;s and a library.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Broadside is <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/developers-reveal-new-plans-broadwalk-10295561\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"holding the first public consultationLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">holding the first public consultation<\/a> on its renewed and scaled back housing plans for Redcatch Quarter on Friday this week, July 11, at two drop-in sessions at a nearby church.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The plans will see around<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/developers-reveal-new-plans-broadwalk-10295561\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" 500 new homes being built thereLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> 500 new homes being built there<\/a>, rather than the 850 the developers obtained planning permission for in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/victory-people-power-broadwalk-shopping-9772309\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"controversial circumstances back in the summer of 2023Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial circumstances back in the summer of 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">While the shopping centre is still open, albeit on borrowed time, the car park is now closed forever.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1_BR_PG_310523broadwalk-26.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>(Image: PAUL GILLIS \/ Reach PLC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Bristol Live<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/shopping-centre-car-park-closed-10242254\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> reported back in early June<\/a> that the car park had been closed as a temporary measure because of structural concerns. A spokesperson for Broadside Holdings said the car park was shut now for good, because of those issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cBroadside Holdings has owned the Broad Walk Shopping Centre since April 2021 after acquiring it from US fund Cerberus,\u201d a spokesperson for Broadside Holdings said. \u201cUnder Cerberus\u2019, and then throughout Broadside\u2019s ownership, the structural integrity of the ageing (now 50-year old) concrete multi-storey car park has been carefully monitored to ensure this could be safely used for as long as possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cRecently, further degradation of the concrete led to a temporary closure for further technical investigation and advice,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIn accordance with independent engineers\u2019 advice, over the period of our ownership we have gradually reduced the number of usable spaces to minimise overloading. But local resident Laura Chapman took legal action against <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-city-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol City Council<\/a> over the way that planning permission had been granted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">An <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/victory-people-power-broadwalk-shopping-9772309\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"out-of-court compromise deal between Broadside and Ms ChapmanLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">out-of-court compromise deal between Broadside and Ms Chapman<\/a> has seen the plans scaled back. Its owners said they&#8217;ve been given notice to leave, but are hoping to remain into next year.
