{"id":25386,"date":"2025-04-16T18:04:12","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T18:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/25386\/"},"modified":"2025-04-16T18:04:12","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T18:04:12","slug":"uk-supreme-court-rules-woman-means-biological-female-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/25386\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Supreme Court rules \u2018woman\u2019 means biological female \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The long-running legal challenge was brought by the For Women Scotland campaign group \u2014 who argue sex is biological, binary and can\u2019t be changed \u2014 against the Scottish government.<\/p>\n<p>The case dates back to 2018 when the Scottish administration, led by then-First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, passed legislation to establish gender quotas to get more women serving on public boards. <\/p>\n<p>It was eventually amended to count trans women with gender recognition certificates, confirming their female gender, as women for the purposes of the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Scottish courts ruled, and then upheld in the Scottish government\u2019s favor, that sex is \u201cnot limited to biological or birth sex,\u201d and must include those in possession of a gender recognition certificate (GRC).<\/p>\n<p>But that was challenged in London\u2019s Supreme Court by campaigners.
