Manchester United fans raced to social media after seeing former director John Murtough join Atalanta.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As soon as Sir Jim Ratcliffe\u2019s takeover of Manchester United<\/a> was complete, his team got to work restructuring the hierarchy at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n

John Murtough was axed in April 2024<\/a> after spending 11 years at the club across various different roles.<\/p>\n

The Glazers neglected United\u2019s footballing department<\/a>, with John Murtough<\/a> one of several chiefs who were internally promoted by the American family. <\/p>\n

Murtough was responsible for hiring Erik ten Hag and the poor recruitment that followed.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Serie A side Atalanta appointed Murtough<\/a> as director of global development.<\/p>\n

United have completed two deals with Atalanta recently \u2013 the \u00a337m deal for Amad Diallo. But Murtough played a key role when United paid \u00a364m for Rasmus Hojlund<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n

United fans on social media now believe that the over-inflated price for Hojlund is linked to Murtough\u2019s new role.<\/p>\n

Man United overpaid for Rasmus Hojlund<\/p>\n

Supporters are not wrong \u2013 United horribly overpaid for Hojlund in 2023 and it has piled unnecessary pressure on the Dane.<\/p>\n

United\u2019s data suggested Hojlund was worth \u00a350m<\/a>, but the recruitment team \u2013 headed by Murtough at the time \u2013 ignored the signals and spent well over that amount.<\/p>\n

In January it was reported that Hojlund was worth \u00a359m<\/a>, ranking him as United\u2019s fourth-most valuable player. But his poor form this season will see his value take a big hit.<\/p>\n

His struggles in front of goal have even seen Hojlund linked with an exit<\/a> with Italian clubs in particular showing an interest in potentially bringing him back to Serie A.<\/p>\n

However, it feels extremely unlikely that United would be able to demand a profit from Hojlund if he was sold in the summer.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
