As a result, bettors were only taxed if they walked away from the table with a net profit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">But starting next year, under the new bill, which the president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/trump-signs-big-beautiful-bill-215247453.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:signed into law Friday,;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed into law Friday,<\/a> bettors can only deduct 90 percent of their losses from their declared income.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">This sets up the potential for people to pay income taxes even if they ultimately came out of their bets at a loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Insiders warned the change could drive away professional and recreational gamers alike impacting tax revenue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cDid anyone think this through?\u201d Russell Fox, a Nevada-based accountant specializing in gambling, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2025\/07\/04\/tax-bill-gambling-deductions-provision\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:told;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">told<\/a> The Washington Post. \u201cThey thought: \u2018We\u2019ll bury this somewhere in the bill. It\u2019s actually bad for the IRS, too. We need a less-complex tax system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Rep. Dina Titus, a Democratic congresswoman who represents Nevada, said earlier this week she would seek a \u201clegislative fix\u201d to the provision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThis is just another attack on gaming and tourism and on districts like mine that rely on these industries,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/how-trumps-big-beautiful-bill-could-impact-gamblers-3392020\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:said;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">said<\/a> in a statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. \u201cThis also punishes people who are trying to do the right thing by reporting gambling on their taxes, pushing them towards offshore outlets and the predictions market, which unlike legitimate gambling sources, do not invest in bricks and mortar, pay state taxes, hire union labor, or contribute to problem gaming efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Professional gamblers have also warned about the impact of the provision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThis new amendment to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act would end professional gambling in the U.S. and hurt casual gamblers, too,\u201d poker player Phil Galfond <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PhilGalfond\/status\/1940198538493010316\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:wrote;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">wrote<\/a> on X on Tuesday. \u201cYou could pay more in tax than you won. Contact your representative quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Others suggested the provision could push gamblers away from casinos and traditional sports books to online <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/americans-addicted-gambling-election-because-122138310.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:prediction markets such as Kalshi;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prediction markets such as Kalshi<\/a>, which in practice often function like gambling but are regulated and taxed differently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Sports betting is legal in 38 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The gaming industry brought in a record high of nearly $72 billion last year, according to the American Gaming Association.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Trump administration\u2019s signature spending package contains a little-known provision which could radically upend the gambling industry.
