{"id":254793,"date":"2025-07-11T00:07:19","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T00:07:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/254793\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T00:07:19","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T00:07:19","slug":"ceo-of-troubled-sussex-hospital-trust-to-step-down-hospitals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/254793\/","title":{"rendered":"CEO of troubled Sussex hospital trust to step down | Hospitals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The chief executive of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/nhs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a> hospital trust where police are investigating the possible manslaughter of more than 90 patients is to step down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">George Findlay said he was \u201cvery proud\u201d of his 10 years at University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/hospitals\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hospitals<\/a> Sussex NHS trust, including the last three years as its chief executive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Announcing he would be handing over the job to an as-yet-unnamed successor this month, he acknowledged it had been a \u201chugely demanding job\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">His departure comes as Sussex police continue to investigate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2025\/feb\/04\/sussex-police-consider-manslaughter-charges-over-dozens-of-hospital-deaths\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">possible corporate and individual manslaughter charges <\/a>over allegations of medical negligence and a cover-up at the trust, first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2023\/jun\/09\/police-investigate-dozens-of-deaths-royal-sussex-county-hospital-brighton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed in the Guardian in June 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Operation Bramber is focused on the deaths of more than 90 patients and serious harm suffered by more than 100 others, in the general surgery and neurosurgery departments of Royal Sussex county hospital in Brighton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">There is no suggestion that Finlay\u2019s departure is linked to the police investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">His resignation comes more than a year after the Royal College of Surgeons questioned the suitability of the leadership team at the trust after it found a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2024\/feb\/06\/culture-of-fear-at-sussex-hospitals-trust-royal-college-of-surgeons-reports\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cculture of fear\u201d and \u201cbullying\u201d <\/a>in its operating theatres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Findlay is named as a respondent in two pending employment tribunal cases against the trust by senior whistleblowers.<\/p>\n<p>Quick GuideContact us about this storyShow<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1752192439_487_4000.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"dcr-1vs4o7z\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The best public interest journalism relies on first-hand accounts from people in the know.<\/p>\n<p>If you have something to share on this subject you can contact us confidentially using the following methods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Secure Messaging in the Guardian app<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Guardian app has a tool to send tips about stories. Select &#8216;Secure Messaging&#8217;. <\/p>\n<p><strong>SecureDrop, instant messengers, email, telephone and post<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>See our guide at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theguardian.com\/tips<\/a>\u00a0for alternative methods and the pros and cons of each.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Illustration: Guardian Design \/ Rich Cousins<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for your feedback.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Krishna Singh, an eminent surgeon still employed by the trust, claimed he lost his post as the trust\u2019s clinical director after raising concerns about patient safety, citing some of the deaths now under investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Mansoor Foroughi, a consultant neurosurgeon, alleges he was sacked by Findlay in December 2021 after he raised concerns about 19 deaths and 23 cases of serious patient harm in the previous six years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The trust, which is defending the claims, has said it is not appropriate to comment publicly about the personal matters of past or present staff members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">When he was deputy chief executive, under the previous chief executive, Marianne Griffiths, Findlay was praised by the former health secretary Jeremy Hunt for creating \u201cperhaps the best learning culture I saw anywhere in the NHS\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Findlay said his departure would allow his successor to lead the trust strategy for 2025-30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">He said: \u201cLeading such a large, diverse organisation is a hugely demanding job and I do not anticipate continuing to do so for a further five years.
