Although Cain acknowledges Superman’s status as an immigrant, the actor worries that Gunn has leaned into politics so much so that the character’s messaging has changed.

“How woke is Hollywood going to make this character?” Cain asked. “How much is Disney going to change their Snow White? Why are they going to change these characters to exist for the times? For Superman, it was ‘truth, justice, and the American way.’ Well, they dropped that.”

Gunn’s Superman has altered the phrase to “truth, justice, and the human way.” Cain disagrees with this change.

“I don’t think is a great idea. I think if you want to create a new character, go ahead and do that. But for me, Superman has always stood for ‘truth, justice, and the American way’ — and the American way is tremendously immigrant friendly. But there are rules,” Cain explained. “You can’t come in saying, ‘I want to get rid of all the rules in America because I wanted to be more like Somalia.’ Well, that doesn’t work, because you had to leave Somalia to come here — so it doesn’t make any sense.

“If people are coming for economic opportunity, let’s take a look at your government and why you don’t have that economic opportunity . . .And there have to be limits, because we can’t have everybody here in the United States . . . our society will fail.”

Ultimately, Cain feels that leaning into the immigrant themes will negatively affect its box office return. Superman is currently projected for a domestic opening between $120 million and $130 million. That would be the third-largest opening at the domestic box office this year, behind A Minecraft Movie ($162 million) and Lilo & Stitch ($146 million).

Superman soars into theaters on July 11.

Dean Cain, who played Clark Kent on the TV show Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,…

[3935
32017,98014,77,19919,16280,3943,4169,16,15
0":"post-254984","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-movies","8":"tag-dc","9":"tag-dean-cain","10":"tag-entertainment","11":"tag-james-gunn","12":"tag-movie-news","13":"tag-movies","14":"tag-superman","15":"tag-uk","16":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
