{"id":255087,"date":"2025-07-11T02:52:33","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T02:52:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/255087\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T02:52:33","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T02:52:33","slug":"macron-reignites-brexit-row-blaming-small-boats-crisis-on-split-with-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/255087\/","title":{"rendered":"Macron reignites Brexit row blaming small boats crisis on split with EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tAs talks between the leaders took place in London, migrants continued making the perilous journey across the Channel\t\t\t\t\t                <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/eu-split-uk-joining-weapons-fund-france-saying-non-3791737?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Emmanuel Macron<\/a> has blamed Brexit <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/migrant-benefits-cut-small-boats-crisis-3797184?srsltid=AfmBOooqq2aDCt1-uNik3gt4mFA-Na7bAEM4uykt95SSLoy3KyzRbu-T&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for the small boat crisis <\/a>in the English Channel as the UK and France unveiled a new migrant returns deal.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/france-uk-migrant-deal-small-boats-3793329?srsltid=AfmBOoqm8QJtDJCCcbUaowfWoXAfEC2LtB5bpdr0OnUSOLnvV182fKvg&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one in, one out pilot scheme<\/a> was described by Sir Keir Starmer as a \u201cbreakthrough\u201d in his Government\u2019s attempt to stop boat crossings.<\/p>\n<p>He and his French counterpart dismissed any talk of \u201cfinger-pointing\u201d and blame over the spiralling number of dangerous crossings being made, arguing they had a shared responsibility to tackle the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>But standing next to Starmer as the two leaders announced the deal, Macron said voters had been \u201csold a lie\u201d by British politicians about the impact leaving the EU would have on illegal migration.<\/p>\n<p>His comments were labelled as \u201cnonsense\u201d by a former Brexit minister, while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage told The i Paper Macron was \u201carrogant\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Macron said voters in the UK had been told the problem causing irregular migration was Europe, \u201cbut the problem has become <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/inside-whitehall-plan-achieve-eu-reset-3257360?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the lack of agreement between the UK and EU had made the issue worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince Brexit \u2013 and I\u2019m saying all this quite honestly \u2013 I know it\u2019s not your case, Prime Minister, but many people in your country explained that Brexit would make it possible to fight more effectively against illegal immigration,\u201d Macron said.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"514\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/SEI_258577057.jpg\" alt=\"A group of people thought to be migrants are brought in to Dover, Kent, onboard an RNLI Lifeboat following a small boat incident in the Channel. Photo credit should read: Gareth Fuller\/PA Wire\" class=\"wp-image-3799859\"  \/>Migrants are brought in to Dover, Kent, on the day the new deal was announced (Photo: Gareth Fuller\/PA Wire)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s in fact since Brexit the UK has no migratory agreement with the EU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Macron argued it actually had created an \u201cincentive\u201d for people to make the crossing: \u201cThe precise opposite of what Brexit had promised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Macron\u2019s claims about Brexit are \u2018nonsense\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the President\u2019s claims, Farage \u2013 a long-time campaigner for Brexit \u2013 described Macron as \u201can arrogant French President who has subjugated Starmer\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg \u2013 the former Tory minister for Brexit opportunities \u2013 told The i Paper that Macron\u2019s claims about Brexit making the small boats crisis worse were \u201cnonsense\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cUnder the Dublin Accord, we took in more people than we sent. Part of the problem now is that the French are cheating the British taxpayer, taking our money while being too frightened to get their feet wet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Government source refused to comment on Macron\u2019s claims, simply saying they would leave Macron to \u201ctalk to his own comments\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>What will the \u2018historic\u2019 pilot scheme involve?<\/p>\n<p>Under the pilot scheme announced on Thursday, people arriving on a small boat will be detained in the UK and returned to France. They will also lose their right to apply for asylum in future. <\/p>\n<p>In exchange, the British government will offer a safe route for asylum seekers in France \u2013 who have not attempted to cross the Channel \u2013 to come to the UK.<\/p>\n<p>This will operate on a one in, one out system and will be scaled up after the initial launch of the pilot, the government said. <\/p>\n<p>The scheme will work alongside ongoing efforts to prevent boats from leaving French shores. <\/p>\n<p>The Government said further operational details about how the returns will be handled, and any additional cost, will be set out in due course.<\/p>\n<p>But the UK has not agreed any new funding to be sent to France as part of this agreement. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/SEI_258569564.jpg\" alt=\"LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 10: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer (L) and French President Emmanuel Macron shake hands as they hold a press conference on July 10, 2025 in London, England.
