The US national road champion settled for runner-up honors on stage 6 of the Tour de France, but with multiple options to play for the team, he’s confident a stage win will come.<\/p>\n

Riding in his third Tour de France, Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) drew closer than ever before to his first career Grand Tour stage win on Thursday \u2013 but not close enough. After getting into the decisive breakaway on stage 6, the 24-year-old American settled for runner-up honors behind Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) in Vire Normandie.<\/p>\n

Fittingly for a rider with a mustache not unlike that of Cal Naughton, Jr. from Talladega Nights, Simmons put his own spin on Ricky Bobby’s iconic mantra in his post-race interview.<\/p>\n

“Unfortunately in cycling you only remember the winners,” he said.<\/p>\n

In other words: “If you ain’t first, you’re last.”<\/p>\n
