{"id":256046,"date":"2025-07-11T11:26:24","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T11:26:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/256046\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T11:26:24","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T11:26:24","slug":"oscar-nominated-bookshop-band-head-for-edinburgh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/256046\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscar-nominated Bookshop Band head for Edinburgh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nThe Oscar and Ivor Novello nominated Bookshop Band will play at Edinburgh\u2019s Pianodome on Monday 14 July as part of their 18-date Magical Summer Tour.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\">The gig will feature brand new music inspired by the writing of Robert Macfarlane plus tracks from their latest album.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\">Based in Wigtown but originating in Bath, the duo specialise in using both contemporary and classical literature to inspire their songwriting. They were Oscar and Ivor-Novello nominated for their work with Aardman animations to create the songs for the hit musical movie Robin, Robin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\">Audiences will be among the first to hear Ben Please and Beth Porter\u2019s most recent songs, including one created by special request of Robert Macfarlane for the launch of his new book Is a River Alive? They will also be performing music from Emerge, Return \u2013 their 2024 album which was produced by rock legend Pete Townshend, who also played on each of the 12 tracks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\">July\u2019s tour got its name following praise for the band\u2019s music for the launch of Is a River Alive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\"><b>Robert Macfarlane said:<\/b> \u201cThe Bookshop Band make magic; conjuring words off the page and into song, bringing books to strange, new lyric life, singing their ways into collaboration with writers\u2019 voices and visions in ways that are thrilling and original.\u201d\u00a0<b\/><b\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Penguin Books added that that \u201cThe music was magical\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\">The tour takes place in art centres, book shops and other intimate venues from Glasgow to Devon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\"><b>Ben said:<\/b> \u201cWe love being on the road, playing at intimate venues. For us it\u2019s the absolute essence of being musicians \u2013 the chance to share our music, and the books we love, with audiences in every part of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\">The duo, recently featured in the New York Times, occupy a unique space, straddling the worlds of music and literature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\">They have just written and performed the music for the new audiobook adaptation of Philip Pullman\u2019s trilogy,\u00a0His Dark Materials. Meanwhile Beth has been performing as part of the Spell Songs ensemble which grew out of two other Robert Macfarlane books \u2013 The Lost Words and The Lost Spells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\">During this summer\u2019s tour there will be the chance to get a sneak preview of an EP they have produced inspired by the counterculture Oz magazine of the late 1960s. The EP will be fully launched after the tour in the autumn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\">The band has worked with many celebrated authors with best-sellers such as Kate Mosse (The Ghost Ship) asking them to write songs for their book launches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\">They have previously recorded 13 albums, which have been sold at gigs and online.
