{"id":256083,"date":"2025-07-11T11:46:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T11:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/256083\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T11:46:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T11:46:11","slug":"donald-trump-offers-to-send-more-arms-to-ukraine-via-nato-allies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/256083\/","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump offers to send more arms to Ukraine via Nato allies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description o3-type-body-base\">Your guide to what Trump\u2019s second term means for Washington, business and the world<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump has said he plans to make a \u201cmajor statement\u201d on Russia next week, as he signalled the US would sell more weapons to allies to send to Ukraine, including Patriot missile systems. <\/p>\n<p>The US president renewed his criticism of his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in an interview with NBC News, and said the new weapons deliveries would be sent through other members of the Nato alliance, rather than directly from the US.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m disappointed in Russia, but we\u2019ll see what happens over the next couple of weeks\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009I think I\u2019ll have a major statement to make on Russia on Monday,\u201d Trump said. <\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s comments came amid warming ties with Ukrainian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/cdfbb2ea-4755-42a6-9b44-7429e9bb86c7\" data-trackable=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a>, and an apparent cooling of relations with Putin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy said\u200b in Rome on Thursday that he had had \u201ca positive dialogue with President Trump on the Patriot systems\u200b\u201d when the two spoke by phone last week. <\/p>\n<p>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a3959a07-34ed-4be3-95f1-e2ce588cfcba\" data-trackable=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier this week<\/a> said he was \u201cnot happy\u201d with the Russian leader for failing to find an end to the war.<\/p>\n<p>The US president said he had reached what he called a new deal for sending weapons to Ukraine, through purchases made by Nato allies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re sending weapons to Nato, and Nato is paying for those weapons, 100 per cent\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009The weapons that are going out are going to Nato, and then Nato is going to be giving those weapons [to Ukraine], and Nato is paying for those weapons,\u201d Trump said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to be sending Patriots to Nato and then Nato will distribute that,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/0a5a4a47-a323-404b-b9aa-bfe2e1e84911\" data-trackable=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nato<\/a>, of which the US is the biggest member, does not collectively purchase weapons, but some members of the alliance have indicated their willingness to purchase more weapons on behalf of Ukraine. Germany\u00a0has offered to buy two Patriot systems from the US to give to Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p>A German government spokesman said on Friday that \u201cclose consultations\u201d were taking place with the US on the issue, while declining to give further details.<\/p>\n<p>German defence minister Boris Pistorius will also raise the matter with his US counterpart Pete Hegseth on a visit to Washington on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The US-made Patriot systems are some of Washington\u2019s most advanced air defence weapons and a key part of Ukraine\u2019s defences against Russian attacks. They are the only air defence weapon in Kyiv\u2019s arsenal capable of downing Russia\u2019s hypersonic ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy said h\u200be had request\u200bed from Trump \u201c1\u200b0 Patriot systems and the corresponding volume of missiles for these systems\u201d, and had secured agreements with Germany and Norway for the purchase of three Patriot systems from the US.<\/p>\n<p>Russia has launched some of its heaviest bombardments of the war over the past week, including missile and drone attacks lasting nearly 10 hours from Wednesday night into Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy said on Thursday in Rome, where he was meeting European leaders, that \u201cRussia wants to launch 1,000 drones\u201d a day at Ukraine soon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"n-content-recommended__title o3-type-body-highlight\">Recommended<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/132a312d-b5cd-4e74-9b82-3545ff574176\" data-trackable=\"image-link\" data-trackable-context-story-link=\"image-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"o-teaser__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fd1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net.jpeg\" alt=\"Russian army soldier walks along a ruined street of Malaya Loknya settlement\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He said that joint production of interceptor drones capable of bringing down Russia\u2019s Iran-designed suicide drones was a solution that he had discussed with western allies. \u201cIf our partners take in everything I\u2019ve shared and funding is allocated accordingly, we will be able to do it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy said there were four Ukrainian companies and one US-Ukrainian company that already produce the drones. \u201cWhat we need now is to scale up production,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump had said earlier this week that the US would continue to send weapons to Ukraine, reversing an earlier Pentagon decision to halt deliveries of some critical weaponry. <\/p>\n<p>In the NBC interview, Trump also signalled his support for Republican Lindsey Graham\u2019s bill to impose fresh sanctions on Russia, and described the legislation as \u201cletting the president do whatever he wants\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a bill that the Senate is passing that very respectfully lets the president do whatever he wants, as you know\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009In other words, it\u2019s\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009my option if I want to use it.
