{"id":256488,"date":"2025-07-11T15:20:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T15:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/256488\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T15:20:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T15:20:13","slug":"former-superman-actor-rips-into-woke-james-gunn-adaptation-amid-immigrant-superhero-saga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/256488\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Superman actor rips into &#8216;woke&#8217; James Gunn adaptation amid &#8216;immigrant&#8217; superhero saga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dean Cain, who portrayed Superman in the 1990s television series Lois &amp; Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, has criticised director James Gunn&#8217;s upcoming Superman film for being too &#8220;woke&#8221; and emphasising the character&#8217;s immigrant status.<\/p>\n<p>Cain also took aim at director Gunn for comments he made ahead of the film&#8217;s release in cinemas in which he branded the superhero tale &#8220;an immigrant story&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Gunn&#8217;s comments to The Times UK, where he described Superman as &#8220;the story of America&#8221; and &#8220;an immigrant that came from other places and populated the country&#8221;, sparked immediate conservative backlash earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>The director also characterised his Superman film as &#8220;a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"bd390\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"ab02a951a6921eb856893691e51f21fb\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%202000%201500'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/dean-cain.jpg\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" alt=\"Dean Cain\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Dean Cain has let rips against the latest Superman adaptation <\/p>\n<p> GETTY<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to TMZ, Cain questioned: &#8220;How woke is Hollywood going to make this character?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The actor believes Gunn made a &#8220;mistake&#8221; by highlighting Superman&#8217;s immigrant story, predicting it will &#8220;hurt&#8221; the film&#8217;s box office performance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think bringing Superman into it&#8230; I think that was a mistake by James Gunn to say it&#8217;s an immigrant thing, and I think it&#8217;s going to hurt the numbers on the movie,&#8221; Cain stated.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his concerns, Cain said he remains &#8220;excited&#8221; to see the film, although he expressed frustration with Hollywood&#8217;s tendency to alter established characters, asking: &#8220;Why are they going to change these characters [to] exist for the times?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He referenced Superman&#8217;s traditional motto, explaining: &#8220;For Superman, it was &#8216;truth, justice, and the American way.&#8217; Well, they dropped that&#8230; They came up with &#8216;truth, justice, and a better tomorrow.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The former Superman actor argued against modifying beloved characters, stating: &#8220;Changing beloved characters, I don&#8217;t think is a great idea. If you want to create a new character, go ahead and do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cain also questioned broader Hollywood trends, asking: &#8220;How much is Disney going to change their Snow White?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He defended Superman&#8217;s traditional values, noting: &#8220;Superman&#8217;s inherent weakness is his goodness. Fox News host Jesse Watters mocked the film, joking: &#8220;Superman is fighting for truth, justice, and your preferred pronouns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Watters also quipped that Superman should wear &#8220;MS-13&#8221; on his cape, referencing the Central American gang.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative commentator Kellyanne Conway added: &#8220;We don&#8217;t go to the movie theater to be lectured to and to have somebody throw their ideology onto us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The backlash emerged amid President Donald Trump&#8217;s intensified immigration policies, including community raids and attempts to revoke naturalised citizens&#8217; legal status.<\/p>\n<p>Cain acknowledged Superman&#8217;s extraterrestrial origins, stating: &#8220;We know Superman is an immigrant \u2014 he&#8217;s a freaking alien.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, he argued that whilst &#8220;the &#8216;American way&#8217; is immigrant friendly, tremendously immigrant friendly,&#8221; there must be boundaries.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"6dec5\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"f8e2193f691f331dfb44bab52c8540cc\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201245%20700'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/david-corenswet.jpg\" width=\"1245\" height=\"700\" alt=\"David Corenswet\"\/><\/p>\n<p>David Corenswet plays the superhero in the new film <\/p>\n<p> DC<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But there are rules. We can&#8217;t have everybody, society will fail.
