{"id":257447,"date":"2025-07-11T23:33:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T23:33:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/257447\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T23:33:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T23:33:10","slug":"glasgows-iconic-barrowlands-gig-venue-set-for-major-overhaul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/257447\/","title":{"rendered":"Glasgow&#8217;s iconic Barrowlands gig venue set for major overhaul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Barrowlands is set for a major upgrade of its iconic neon illuminated facade.<\/p>\n<p>The music venue in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/where\/glasgow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasgow&#8217;s<\/a> east end is one of the most iconic in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Illuminated Barrowlands Ballroom facade at night.\" height=\"702\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/famous-illuminated-facade-barrowlands-ballroom-884480542.jpg\" data-caption=\"Plans have been lodged to upgrade Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom's iconic facade\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/famous-illuminated-facade-barrowlands-ballroom-884480542.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2<\/p>\n<p>Plans have been lodged to upgrade Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom&#8217;s iconic facadeCredit: Getty<a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow, Scotland.\" height=\"744\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/gallowgate-east-side-glasgow-opened-817883615.jpg\" data-caption=\"The current building dates back to 1960 and it has become an iconic music venue\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/gallowgate-east-side-glasgow-opened-817883615.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2<\/p>\n<p>The current building dates back to 1960 and it has become an iconic music venueCredit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>The firm that owns the premises as well as the Barras Marketplace, Margaret McIver Ltd, has lodged plans with the city council to upgrade the front of the building.<\/p>\n<p>The proposals include adding two LED displays above the Gallowgate entrance, as reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/czjk1gmrjwjo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The renowned neon signage was originally installed in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>The Barrowland Ballroom was first opened as a dance hall by Maggie McIver on December 24, 1934.<\/p>\n<p>A devastating fire ripped through the original ballroom in 1958.<\/p>\n<p>But the building was rebuilt and reopened to revellers two years later.<\/p>\n<p>The Barrowlands was later transformed into a gig venue, featuring a sprung dancefloor, and has become a Glasgow institution.<\/p>\n<p>World-famous musicians have played to audiences over the decades, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/who\/bob-dylan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bob Dylan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/who\/david-bowie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Bowie<\/a>, Iggy Pop, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/oasis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oasis<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/u2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Homegrown acts that have graced the stage include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/who\/travis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travis<\/a>, Simple Minds, and Texas.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Margaret McIver Ltd, said: &#8220;The Barrowland fa\u00e7ade presents an exciting opportunity to serve as a fully digital platform for showcasing upcoming events and sharing venue-related information.<\/p>\n<p>AMERICAN music icon John Legend was left red-faced after reportedly playing to an &#8217;empty&#8217; arena<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has the potential to elevate the iconic fa\u00e7ade by integrating a dynamic, contemporary digital feature.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A decision over the company&#8217;s plans is pending.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"THE Barrowlands is set for a major upgrade of its iconic neon illuminated facade.
