{"id":257507,"date":"2025-07-12T00:03:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-12T00:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/257507\/"},"modified":"2025-07-12T00:03:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-12T00:03:14","slug":"ladybirds-swarm-across-britain-in-biggest-plague-since-1976","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/257507\/","title":{"rendered":"Ladybirds swarm across Britain in biggest plague since 1976"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"publish_date\">11 July 2025, 23:58<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Ladybirds have been swarming the UK amid the heatwaves.\" class=\"content-image\" data-image-catalogue-id=\"739170\" width=\"660\" height=\"370\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/739170\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>    Ladybirds have been swarming the UK amid the heatwaves.<\/p>\n<p>        Picture: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.co.uk\/license\/1498152448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\nGetty<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"standfirst\">An influx of ladybirds have descended on the UK in the biggest plague in nearly half a century due to rising temperatures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\">On Thursday, a swarm of the insects at Lord\u2019s in London distracted players and led to a brief pause in England\u2019s contest against India on the first day of the third Rothesay Test.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\">Elsewhere, &#8220;millions&#8221; of ladybirds have been sighted at popular holiday spots along the Essex coast, as well as in Suffolk, according to local papers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\">Ecologist and ladybird expert Professor Helen Roy, from the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, explained &#8220;very high&#8221; numbers of ladybirds had been recorded this year due to warm weather and high aphid numbers, referring to the quantity of the small, sap-sucking insects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\">It comes as temperatures reached 34.7C on Friday, the Met Office said, during the UK&#8217;s third heatwave as another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbc.co.uk\/weather\/temperatures-34c-hosepipe-ban-heatwave\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scorching weekend is forecasted.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\"><strong>Read more: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbc.co.uk\/news\/uk\/schools-ban-play-heatwave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Schools ban children from playing outside during heatwaves as pupils kept inside for &#8216;hot play&#8217; breaks<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\"><strong>Read more: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbc.co.uk\/news\/tk-max-homesense-recall-tea-products-found-contain-insects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TK Max and Homesense recall tea products found to contain insects<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"'Millions' of ladybirds have been spotted across Essex this summer.\" class=\"content-image\" data-image-catalogue-id=\"739171\" width=\"660\" height=\"370\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/739171\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>    &#8216;Millions&#8217; of ladybirds have been spotted across Essex this summer.<\/p>\n<p>        Picture: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alamy.com\/stock-photo-cluster-of-684803351.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\nAlamy<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\">Dr Peter Brown, associate professor in ecology and conservation at Anglia Ruskin University, said the last \u201cboom year\u201d for ladybirds was during the hot summer of 1976, although there have been years in between when there has been a rise but the locations have been more isolated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\">\u201cIn 1976 there were a lot of seven-spot ladybirds on the beaches as they searched for food and people thought they were invading \u2013 they were not, as they are native to the UK,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\">Dr Brown, who is an organiser of the UK Ladybird Survey, added that the increase in numbers should be seen as a positive and the current warm conditions were the reason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\">Echoing his sentiment, Tim Coulson, professor of zoology and head of biology at the University of Oxford, encouraged people to \u201clearn to love\u201d ladybirds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\">\u201cWarm weather means more aphids because they can complete each generation faster \u2013 insects, including ladybirds and aphids, tend to speed up their lives in warm weather,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\">\u201cLadybirds eat aphids, and an abundance of aphids mean ladybirds have a lot to eat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\">\u201cPeople should learn to love the ladybirds. They are effective predators of aphids, which can be a major pest of many plant species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\">\u201cMuch in the way that wolves keep deer numbers in check in some parts of the world, ladybirds keep aphid numbers down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-text\">\u201cA swarm of ladybirds in a cricket game, even against India, should remind people of the role that predators play in keeping the ecology of earth in a healthy state.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"11 July 2025, 23:58 Ladybirds have been swarming the UK amid the heatwaves.
