Councillors in Stockport have clashed over how to solve the borough\u2019s urgent need for more housing.<\/p>\n
The town hall is under no overall control but is led by a Lib Dem minority administration, which recently elected Coun Mark Roberts as the new council leader.<\/p>\n
Stockport<\/a>\u2019s Labour<\/a> opposition group also has a new leader in Coun Christine Carrigan. The two squared off over housing at a town hall meeting on July 10.<\/p>\n Coun Carrigan asked the council leader if his administration would do everything to build more social homes.<\/p>\n Never miss a story with the MEN’s daily Catch Up newsletter – get it in your inbox by signing up here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cWe Liberal Democrats<\/a> have always been in favour of housing, it\u2019s building in the right place, where we differ is about concreting over the green belt, that\u2019s where we push back,\u201d Coun Roberts said.<\/p>\n \u201cDelivering the right homes in the right places in a sustainable way, that\u2019s absolutely what we\u2019re about here in Stockport.\u201d<\/p>\n He added that ‘government need to stick their hand in their pocket’ to support the building of more social homes.<\/p>\n Stockport council<\/a> has a brownfield-first approach to housing, and has shared plans to build around 8,000 homes<\/a> as part of a regeneration boom in the town centre.<\/p>\n But some fear this will lead to a spike in apartments and a lack of family homes.<\/p>\n Coun Carrigan said: \u201cWe have one hell of a big wide borough, [social housing] has to go everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n She later added: \u201cRealistically if we follow what you\u2019re suggesting, we cannot build those family homes in the town centre, you\u2019re right, it\u2019s already too dense, what you\u2019re going to keep putting there is flats, which doesn’t do what we need.”<\/p>\n![\"New](\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_JS331891413-1.jpg\")
