New metro mayor Helen Godwin has signed off on the recruitment of a \u2018Head of Mass Transit\u2019, to lead the creation of a mass transit system for the area covering Bristol, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bath-and-north-east-somerset\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bath<\/a>, North East Somerset and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/south-gloucestershire\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">South Gloucestershire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Applications for the \u00a385,000 a year role are currently being invited, as Ms Godwin steps up her commitment to work up a proposal for a mass transit scheme that has eluded Bristol and the surrounding areas for decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A month ago, the West of England were allocated \u00a3751 million to spend on transport projects &#8211; which will include upgrading the bus network, opening more railway stations and making Bristol\u2019s suburban railway more frequent, and creating better conditions for cycling and scootering in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But the major project &#8211; which would require a few billion pounds rather than the \u00a30.75 billion the Government announced would be coming to Bristol &#8211; is to create a mass transit system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Bristol is the only major city with a metro mayor not to have some kind of tram, light rail or underground system, and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-airport\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol Airport<\/a> is the only major airport in the country not to be linked to its city centre by a rail or tram link.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Ms Godwin told Bristol Live last month that a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/new-transport-route-bristol-airport-10296204\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"mass transit system was her ultimate goalLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">mass transit system was her ultimate goal<\/a>, and linking the airport with the city would be one of its first priorities.
