{"id":258142,"date":"2025-07-12T05:43:21","date_gmt":"2025-07-12T05:43:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/258142\/"},"modified":"2025-07-12T05:43:21","modified_gmt":"2025-07-12T05:43:21","slug":"donald-trump-denied-chance-to-address-parliament-on-visit-to-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/258142\/","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump denied chance to address parliament on visit to UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">President Trump\u2019s visit has been designed to fall at a time when the House of Commons is in recess to avoid inviting him to address MPs and peers, it is understood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The US president will have an \u201cunprecedented\u201d second state visit in September, which will include a state banquet at Windsor Castle. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Unlike President Macron, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/donald-trump\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump<\/a> will not be invited to address politicians in Westminster as his visit will fall when MPs are away for party conference season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/why-trumps-state-visit-wont-meet-his-sky-high-expectations-tmz7g7f22\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Why Trump\u2019s state visit won\u2019t meet his sky-high expectations<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The House of Commons breaks for recess on September 16 and the House of Lords does so two days later. The president\u2019s visit is scheduled for the last two weeks of September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Trump is expected to visit his golf course this summer, when Sir Keir Starmer is reportedly planning to meet with him. As the King of Canada, Charles has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/mark-carney-canada-trump-state-visit-7tbshrvsq\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shown his support for the country<\/a> in the face of aggression from the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The King\u2019s plans for an initial informal visit, as outlined in a letter to Trump, have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/1e48e2af-33d9-43fb-a6fa-a3e9aa815591\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scrapped<\/a>, with Starmer bringing forward the full state visit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Last month, UK officials hand-delivered the \u201cmanu regia\u201d to the White House, the official document of invitation for a state visit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The Times understands that the palace raised concerns about Trump\u2019s threats to Canada, in which he suggested that the Commonwealth realm could become the \u201c51st state\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The timing of the visit offers the King a concession as it does not allow Trump the opportunity to address the Commons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">That privilege has previously been extended to his predecessors Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan. President Zelensky, with whom Trump clashed acrimoniously in the Oval Office earlier this year, gave a speech to both houses of parliament in Westminster Hall in 2023. Nelson Mandela and Charles de Gaulle are among other foreign leaders to have addressed parliament. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/macron-state-visit-migrant-deal-channel-crossings-vk9j3p6gp\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Macron\u2019s state visit was about much more than Channel crossings<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Macron <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/macron-state-visit-migrant-deal-channel-crossings-vk9j3p6gp\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">used his address<\/a> to MPs and peers in the Royal Gallery on Tuesday to criticise \u201cexcessive dependencies\u201d on the US as he took a much more distant approach to Trump than that of Starmer. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"President Macron addressing parliament in London.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/\/d37f1282-78ae-4962-9a99-73f1f96c8657.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>President Macron spoke to MPs and peers in the Royal Gallery<\/p>\n<p>ALASTAIR GRANT\/AP<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Macron also said that the UK and France had a \u201cshared responsibility to address irregular migration\u201d and added that Britain could not \u201cstay on the sidelines\u201d of Europe post-Brexit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The state visits are being held at Windsor Castle while renovation work continues on Buckingham Palace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">US security assessments are likely to restrict the ceremonial aspects of Trump\u2019s visit, as has been the case with other US presidents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">When Trump came for his first state visit in 2019, he did not take part in a carriage procession down the Mall, and the same is expected to apply in September.
