Through one week of the Tour de France, certain truths are emerging in the battle for yellow. Tadej Poga\u010dar is, well, Tadej Poga\u010dar: a fully operational battle station that is formidable and terrifying in all situations.<\/p>\n

Remco Evenepoel is who we thought he is. That is, even who\u00a0he said\u00a0he is: a guy who knows he\u2019s racing for the podium and whose biggest goal<\/a> is to improve on last year\u2019s third-place finish. (It says something of the vibes in the race that K\u00e9vin Vauquelin said after stage 7 that \u201cI felt like Remco didn\u2019t want me there. He was afraid, because he rode at the front the entire climb for the GC.\u201d)<\/p>\n

The wild card is Jonas Vingegaard.<\/p>\n

Yes, he had a bad time trial and is in fourth, staring at a 1:17 deficit to Poga\u010dar. Yes, he hasn\u2019t managed to out-place his rival on a single stage of note yet. And yes, Poga\u010dar was better on long climbs in last month\u2019s Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Jonas Vingegaard admits he didn\u2019t have the legs, and doesn\u2019t necessarily know why.<\/p>\n

But Vingegaard is far from out of this thing, and as the race starts to swing south toward the mountains, a possible leveler is coming into view: team strength.<\/p>\n
