A solution on car tariffs, which stand at 25 percent, is also under discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/07\/10\/trump-slaps-new-35-percent-tariff-on-canada-00448192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told NBC on Thursday evening<\/a> that he would soon notify the EU of new tariffs. The EU said Thursday, meanwhile, that it doesn\u2019t expect a letter in the style of Japan, South Korea \u2014 and, on Thursday, Canada, which the U.S. president hit with a 35 percent tariff.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission was not for now planning any more meetings with U.S. counterparts for Trade Commissioner Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d or Commission President Ursula von der Leyen over the weekend. Gill stressed, however, that \u201cthat can change very quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/von-der-leyen-has-good-call-with-trump-as-eu-pushes-for-july-9-trade-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suddenly extended the deadline<\/a> for trade partners to seal a deal, from July 9 to Aug. 1.<\/p>\n<p>The uncertainty over Trump\u2019s decision <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/201648\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brings into play the question<\/a> of the EU\u2019s first package of retaliation measures against his tariffs. The bloc\u2019s tariffs on U.S. goods worth around \u20ac21.5 billion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-tariffs-donald-trump-diplomat-eu-war-defending-nation-bloc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will kick in automatically<\/a> at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday \u2014\u00a0unless the Commission decides to extend their current suspension.<\/p>\n<p>Gill said this step could be taken quickly by the Commission under a so-called urgency procedure.
