Temperatures are set to soar this weekend as the third heatwave of the summer is felt by many across the UK.<\/a> Some of us will be heading out to enjoy the heat, soaking up the sun and enjoying a drink in a beer garden or cooling down on a nice walk with a delicious ice cream.<\/p>\n

And as the summer holidays<\/a> are soon to get underway, many of us will be reminded of this time of year in years gone by. Growing up in Liverpool, many of us will remember darting home to grab an ice-creams and lolly ices, or ice lollies – depending on what you call it -and head back out to play, or even saving pocket money to buy a treat when the ice-cream man came.<\/p>\n

Through the years,<\/a> we’ve still been able to buy household staples and classic ice-creams and lollies in different variations by numerous brands. But over time, we’ve also said goodbye to a number of childhood favourites.<\/p>\n

And as the weather<\/a> gets hotter, we’ve decided to look back at just a few favourites you’ll remember from growing up in the city.<\/a> Some are only remembered by certain generations, whereas other favourites have stood the test of time.<\/p>\n

Our list isn’t intended to be comprehensive – we asked for suggestions from members of our Liverpool memories and history Facebook group. <\/a>See how many you recognise in our list below.<\/p>\n

Pendleton’s Twicer\"AdvertAdvert from decades ago for the Pendleton’s Twicer Ice Lollie <\/p>\n

For years, Pendleton’s <\/a>was best known for its delicious frozen treats – as well as other sugar confectionery. Located on Newstet Road on Kirkby<\/a> Industrial Estate, the business was first started by the Pendleton brothers back in 1935.<\/a><\/p>\n

A fond part of many childhoods in Merseyside, many will remember when Pendleton’s launched the legendary Twicer in the 1960s<\/a> which became their most famous products. Pendleton wagons could be seen driving around delivering boxes of goods and the catchy TV advertisement slogan “nothing tastes nicer than a Pendleton’s Twicer” is still remembered today.<\/p>\n

Funny Feet\"FunnyFunny Feet iced cream<\/p>\n

This popular strawberry ice-cream is still loved by kids today. Amusing for its shape, it’s been a staple childhood ice-cream for generations.<\/p>\n

Made by Walls, Funny Feet was extremely popular in the 80s but slowly disappeared. Through the years, the retro summer sweet treat has returned to our shelves to be loved by a new generation.<\/p>\n

Originally made by Lyons Maid, Mivvi ice-creams consisted of an ice-cream centre with a fruity flavoured outer ice shell. Many kids will remember all the different flavours on offer, from strawberry to raspberry, orange, pineapple and more.<\/p>\n

More recently, Mivvi was made by Nestle. Today, different brands offer a similar treat – such as Solero’s and Del Monte Fruit Splits.<\/p>\n

Often referred to as an ice-cream sandwich, the ice-cream wafer has long been a household favourite. There are a number of different variations from different brands, but it usually consists of a block of ice-cream sandwiched between two wafers.<\/p>\n

Some variations were vanilla, whereas others offered Neapolitan. In the summer, there was nothing better than grabbing one of these from the freezer and heading out to play in the sunshine with friends.<\/p>\n

Lord Toffingham<\/p>\n

Another Walls favourite of years gone by was the Lord Toffingham. Sold in an orange wrapper with a cartoon image of the Lord on the front, it is only remembered by certain generations.<\/p>\n

The treat consisted of toffee centre, dipped in chocolate. Many will remember saving up their pocket money for one of these.<\/p>\n

Still to this day – you can’t beat a Jubbly frozen drink. Typically in orange flavour, you’d rarely wait for it to completely melt, enjoying its as an ice lolly as opposed to a cool drink.<\/p>\n

Its appeal wasn’t just its flavour though, as it was shaped a bit like a pyramid. Many brands still produce their version of it today.<\/p>\n

Zoom\/Rockets\"AA Rocket lolly(Image: Jess Flaherty)<\/p>\n

Rocket lollies have been loved by children in Liverpool and beyond for decades. Known as a Rocket for its shape, many will know the lolly by a former brand name, which was Zoom.<\/p>\n

The three-flavoured ice lolly typically consists of pineapple, orange and strawberry. So many brands and supermarkets sell them to this day.<\/p>\n

Fab\"AA Fab lolly<\/p>\n

This is without a doubt a symbol of childhood. One of the nations’ favourites for years, everyone has tried or at least come across a Fab in their lifetime.<\/p>\n

The strawberry lolly consists of a white, ice-cream layer, followed by chocolate and sprinkles. What more could you want.<\/p>\n

These flavours are bound to stir some memories. Many members of our Facebook<\/a> group suggested the above flavours as one of their childhood favourites.<\/p>\n

Today, you don’t see them as often as previous decades, but you can still buy them in a number of supermarkets.
