Former Manchester United defender Alvaro Carreras is on the verge of becoming a Real Madrid player, according to reports. United have a buy-back option which expires in 2026 after initially offloading the Spanish full-back to Benfica after a successful loan with the Portuguese giants.<\/p>\n

According to Fabrizio Romano, Ruben Amorim’s side have confirmed that they will not activate the clause that was included in the permanent deal that took him to the southwest of Europe. It has been claimed that the decision from Old Trafford<\/a> has accelerated his return to the Spanish capital and he is now set to have a medical at the La Liga club.<\/p>\n

The suggestion is that Los Blanco will pay \u20ac50million in instalments for his services, while the MEN understands that United held a significant sell-on<\/a> after his exit was confirmed 12 months ago.<\/p>\n

In a tweet, the reporter claimed: “\u00c1lvaro Carreras can be considered new Real Madrid player as he will travel to Madrid today!<\/p>\n

“Medical booked, player now authorized to travel.<\/p>\n

“Man Utd confirm they won\u2019t activate buy back option so deal now sealed.<\/p>\n

“\u20ac50m in installments. Here we go, confirmed.”<\/p>\n

United landed the Spaniard as a 17-year-old, signing the former Real Madrid talent on a four-year deal after he left the Bernabeu on a free transfer.<\/p>\n

During the defensive troubles in Manchester in January, some supporters urged for the defender’s buy-back option to be triggered with Amorim’s options in the full-back department exhausted.<\/p>\n

Despite the increased number of calls for United to sign Carreras, the club opted against a return for the defender – having failed to play his way into Erik ten Hag’s plans.<\/p>\n

Speaking about his future in January, Carreras said: “In truth, we never know, but I have a long-term contract here at Benfica, I’m happy.<\/p>\n

“They gave me the opportunity to grow and I owe them everything.”<\/p>\n
