We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 huxBsk\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>The Princess of Wales told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/wimbledon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wimbledon<\/a> runner-up Amanda Anisimova to keep her \u201chead high\u201d after she suffered a heavy defeat in the women\u2019s singles final.<\/p>\n<p>Kate, who is patron of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/all-england-lawn-tennis-club\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">All England Lawn Tennis Club<\/a>, waved as she received a standing ovation after arriving on Centre Court on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The princess presented the trophy to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/polish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polish<\/a> player <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/iga-swiatek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iga Swiatek<\/a>, who won the title for the first time by beating Anisimova 6-0 6-0 in the final \u2013 which lasted only 57 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Kate consoled Anisimova, who was in tears after the defeat, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/american\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American<\/a> collected her runner\u2019s up prize.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the match about meeting Kate, Anisimova said: \u201cIt was such an honour to meet her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure if she was going to come out today, if she was going to be there, so it\u2019s just really nice to see her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe definitely had a few things to say that were making me emotional again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was really kind and she told me to keep my head high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anisimova added: \u201cI guess it was a positive of today, and I can try and focus on that and not the match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The princess also spoke to ball boys and girls as she came onto court for the presentation.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the final, the princess \u2013 wearing a white belted jacket and pleated skirt \u2013 met eight-year-old Lydia Lowe, who performed the coin toss at the women\u2019s wheelchair final.<\/p>\n<p>After shaking her hand, the princess asked the eight-year-old whether she was \u201cnervous\u201d about the coin toss, adding: \u201cHave you got any advice for me? Because I\u2019ve got to go out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lydia, who suffered a brain injury in January 2024, leaving her visually impaired and having to relearn to walk, talk and eat, replied: \u201cDon\u2019t be nervous. Take deep breaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kate told Lydia that she was a \u201cpro\u201d and asked her \u201cwhat does it mean to you to come and do this?\u201d, with the eight-year-old replying: \u201cIt means loads to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The princess added that she wanted to say \u201cwell done\u201d and celebrate Lydia\u2019s \u201cbravery\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Lydia performed the coin toss while representing the Dan Maskell Tennis Trust, a charity supporting people with disabilities who play tennis by providing them with specialist equipment and grants.<\/p>\n<p>Kate also met Sophie Kneen, 12, who was selected to perform the coin toss at the women\u2019s singles final, representing the AFC Wimbledon Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after meeting the future queen, Sophie told the PA news agency: \u201cIt was so, so good, and I\u2019m really honoured to be able to meet her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked me a bit about the charity I\u2019m with and I said how they try and encourage young girls to play sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Accompanied by All England Club chairwoman Deborah Jevans, Kate also congratulated women\u2019s wheelchair singles champion Wang Ziying and asked her whether the final was a \u201cgood game\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The princess said to the Chinese player: \u201cIt\u2019s very hot playing in this weather, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt must be nice to celebrate at Wimbledon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kate, who donned a bow-shaped brooch in the Wimbledon colours of purple and green, also spoke with Jefferson Iweh, a ticket sales operator; Bob Flint, an honorary steward; and Wimbledon foundation host Shaniah Williams.<\/p>\n<p>The princess told Mr Flint, 75, who first worked at the championships in 1980: \u201cWell done for all the years of commitment and dedication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked about meeting the princess, Ms Williams, 23, said: \u201cIt was an absolute privilege to actually meet and have a conversation with her.
