{"id":260237,"date":"2025-07-13T00:12:22","date_gmt":"2025-07-13T00:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/260237\/"},"modified":"2025-07-13T00:12:22","modified_gmt":"2025-07-13T00:12:22","slug":"former-manchester-headteachers-tips-to-tackle-workplace-stress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/260237\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Manchester headteacher&#8217;s tips to tackle workplace stress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Drew Povey, who led Harrop Fold School in Salford and appeared on the Channel 4 documentary Educating Greater Manchester, now works as a leadership coach and consultant through his Drew Povey Consultancy.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He believes adapting the &#8220;three Rs&#8221; could help reduce stress at work.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Povey said: &#8220;In creating tactics to deal with burnout, leaders need to recognise, reflect and recalibrate.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;What I&#8217;ve learned about burnout over the years is that it&#8217;s a bit insidious, and it can creep in and creep in quietly.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;In order to achieve your goals, it\u2019s important to be strategic, which is where coaching can help.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Without it, workplace pressures and a relentless push to reach the top without a guide or support can actually stop you achieving what you want.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n    <strong>Read more<\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n      He identified a number of early warning signs, including persistent tiredness, disrupted sleep, loss of job satisfaction, and reliance on alcohol or drugs to cope.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Povey said: &#8220;Common symptoms include not being happy at work, feeling tired all the time and disrupted sleep.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;People may also find themselves looking for escapes in alcohol, drugs or other short-term coping mechanisms, which means the problem can quickly escalate into something quite serious.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;And like poor physical health, prevention is the key.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Awareness, for me, is the first antidote to being overwhelmed.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He believes that leaders should avoid trying to manage everything on their own.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Povey said: &#8220;Life is a team sport and we need to stop trying to captain it alone.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;We all need that sounding board, that someone who listens, someone who challenges, someone who supports.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;It is absolutely essential, because this will make the load lighter, but it will also make the path clearer.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He also argued that coaching should not be considered a luxury reserved for those in senior positions.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Povey said: &#8220;Anyone can use the principles of coaching no matter what stage of their career they are.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;If it\u2019s something you want to get into, start with reading a book on coaching and applying those lessons yourself.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Drew Povey, who led Harrop Fold School in Salford and appeared on the Channel 4 documentary Educating Greater&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":260238,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4317],"tags":[105,218,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-260237","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-mental-health","8":"tag-health","9":"tag-mental-health","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114843034722568585","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/260237","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=260237"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/260237\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/260238"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=260237"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=260237"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=260237"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
