{"id":260325,"date":"2025-07-13T01:05:21","date_gmt":"2025-07-13T01:05:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/260325\/"},"modified":"2025-07-13T01:05:21","modified_gmt":"2025-07-13T01:05:21","slug":"its-a-trick-theyve-managed-to-pull-off-really-well","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/260325\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;It&#8217;s a trick they&#8217;ve managed to pull off really well&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;It\u2019s pretty fair to say that Manchester knows music like the back of its head&#8217;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_The-BRIT-Awards-2025-Manchester-Announcement.jpg\" alt=\"Manchester is hosting some huge events this year, including the BRIT Awards, Manchester International Festival, and the Oasis gigs at Heaton Park\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Manchester is hosting some huge events this year, including the BRIT Awards, Manchester International Festival, and the Oasis gigs at Heaton Park(Image: Brit Awards)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It\u2019s perhaps safe to say that what Martin Green doesn\u2019t know about hosting large-scale events isn\u2019t worth knowing at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He has been behind the likes of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/london-2012-olympics\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">London 2012 Olympics<\/a> and Paralympics, the Hull City of Culture 2017 programme and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, and also contributed to the BAFTA-winning <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/eurovision-song-contest\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Eurovision Song Contest<\/a> (ESC) in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI\u2019ve always worked in large scale events and for years, I was always asked what the one show I wanted to work on was,\u201d Martin tells the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester Evening News<\/a>. \u201cMy answer was always the same: Eurovision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI\u2019m a huge fan of the contest, but I didn\u2019t think I would ever get to work on the show because, well, I didn\u2019t have much faith in us winning, but then the opportunity arose for us to host the event for Ukraine because of the ongoing war with Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI was asked by the BBC to come in and be the Managing Director for them, and we did the show and we had a great time. Liverpool was absolutely brilliant and at the time, I thought, well, that&#8217;s a bucket list achieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_AMR_MEN_260625_MG.jpg\" alt=\"Martin Green CBE will join the University as Visiting Professor of Global Events, Culture and Entertainment from July 1st\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Martin Green CBE will join the University as Visiting Professor of Global Events, Culture and Entertainment from July 1st<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Martin\u2019s input on the Liverpool event even led to his appointment as the Director of the Eurovision Song Contest at the end of last year for the European Broadcast Union (EBU), which is a membership organisation of public service broadcasters across the region and owns the Eurovision brand, running the events centrally to be broadcast live around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">His first Eurovision in the role was the 69th contest held in Basel, Switzerland last month. \u201cBecause I\u2019ve now done both sides as a host broadcaster and working with the EBU, it\u2019s been great,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt was a great show and our viewing figures went up yet again which is quite unusual for linear television. We had 166 million people watch the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/tv\/eurovision-2025-results-points-leaderboard-31666784\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">The contest<\/a> was won by Austria&#8217;s JJ with 436 points. The UK, with girl group Remember Monday, came in 19th place with 88 points. In fact, just last week, JJ went <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@johannesjjpietsch\/video\/7518809835765370134\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">viral in a clip<\/a> where he revealed the winner\u2019s trophy had already broken &#8211; replicating previous winner Nemo&#8217;s trophy-break.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_BESTPIX-69th-Eurovision-Song-Contest-Grand-Final.jpg\" alt=\"JJ, representing Austria, celebrates after winning the Grand Final of the 69th Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, Switzerland\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>JJ, representing Austria, celebrates after winning the Grand Final of the 69th Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, Switzerland(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cYes, I saw that,\u201d Martin says when asked about it. \u201cWe\u2019ll be looking into our options to strengthen the trophy in the future and to give winners some care instructions. We\u2019ll be reaching out to JJ to make sure that it gets fixed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Last month, Martin, who was awarded a CBE at the Queen\u2019s New Year Honours List in 2017, was also appointed a Visiting Professor of Global Events, Culture and Entertainment at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/manchester-metropolitan-university\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester Metropolitan University<\/a>. It\u2019s a role he\u2019s just as excited about as Eurovision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The role, which will span three years, aims to support Events Management students by providing industry-leading expertise and practical advice. \u201cI am deeply passionate about live events and have focused a lot of my career on delivering experiences that people truly remember,&#8221; Martin explains. &#8220;I would love to pass on as much industry advice and expertise as I can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He added: &#8220;We need to make sure that we are continuing to retain that status and one of the key ways of doing that is making sure more younger people are entering the industry. So, if I can play a small part in that by passing on my experiences to help level people up then that\u2019s a real privilege and something that is obviously very important.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_MTV-EMAs-2024-Show.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>(Image: Getty Images for Viacom Internat)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWell, look, the live events industry is only growing globally,\u201d he explains. \u201cThe UK has always had a great reputation for mounting and producing a great, big international event, whether it\u2019s cultural or sport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe need to make sure that we are continuing to retain that status and one of the key ways of doing that is making sure more younger people are entering the industry. So, if I can play a small part in that by passing on my experiences to help level people up then that\u2019s a real privilege and something that is obviously very important.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;And I do think Manchester sits in all of that really quite nicely. MMU has always had one of the best event courses not even just in the country but perhaps also globally. It has a great reputation for putting people in the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Obviously, the hope is that they\u2019ll come out of the course and they\u2019re right here in Manchester where all these big events are taking place. Not only are we weeks away from five of the biggest shows of all time with <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/oasis\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Oasis<\/a> at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/heaton-park\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Heaton Park<\/a>, but in the last year alone, the city has been the place for the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/whats-on\/music-nightlife-news\/mtv-emas-manchester-coop-live-30341162\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">MTV Europe Music Awards<\/a> and the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/world-cup-tennis-returns-manchesters-29916680\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Davis Cup Finals.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cManchester City Council and the whole infrastructure of Manchester has for years stood by and invested in its sport and cultural scene,\u201d Martin says of the significance of the city in the global events sphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cYou\u2019ve got the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/manchester-international-festival-announces-food-31775352\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester International Festival<\/a>, which is amazing, and everybody knows of the city\u2019s football and sports heritage. We did a great job with the MTV awards, and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/whats-on\/music-nightlife-news\/brit-awards-coming-manchester-first-31802021\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">it\u2019s got the BRITS coming up next year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt\u2019s pretty fair to say that Manchester knows music like the back of its head, and has produced some of the greatest music in the world. The city is well set for it, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Asked why he thinks Manchester is being considered more seriously on a global scale, Martin says it\u2019s the city-borough\u2019s rich diversity of venues and audiences that shines through like nowhere else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt\u2019s a trick that Manchester has managed to pull off really well,\u201d Martin explains. \u201cThe city really does have something for everyone and it has invested in that. You\u2019ve got your large arenas, and you\u2019ve also got the likes of Aviva Studios, which puts on different things from art to music.
