Give me your tired, your poor, your\u2026international statuary catfights carried out over social media? Whether anyone was asking for the gritty reboot of The New Colossus<\/a> or not, here it is: Rapha\u00ebl Glucksmann<\/strong>, a member of the European Parliament who is part of the leadership of France\u2019s Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, suggested in a speech Sunday<\/a> that America \u201cgive us back the Statue of Liberty,\u201d saying that Donald Trump<\/strong> and his government \u201chave chosen to switch to the side of the tyrants.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lady Liberty, who has wowed with her signature \u201chold up a big torch\u201d arm routine since her unveiling in 1886, was a gift from France to honor the alliance between the countries.<\/p>\n

Glucksmann pointed out that the anti-immigrant stances and less-than-friendly international relations embodied by the current administration were not in line with the spirit of the monument, which is meant to be a symbol of welcome to the shores of America.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was our gift to you,\u201d he said to the applauding audience. \u201cBut apparently you despise her. So she will be happy here with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt<\/strong> was asked in her press briefing whether Trump would send the 225-ton statue back as suggested.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely not,\u201d she said<\/a>. \u201cAnd my advice to that low-level, unnamed French politician would be to remind them that it\u2019s only because of they United States of America that the French are not speaking German right now, so they should be very grateful to our great country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Glucksmann took to X (formerly Twitter) to respond.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the press secretary for this shameful Administration said: without your nation, France would have \u2018spoken German,\u2019\u201d he wrote<\/a>, including a clip of Leavitt\u2019s comments. \u201cIn my case, it goes further: I would simply not be here if hundreds of thousands of young Americans had not landed on our beaches in Normandy.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, just to make it clear, he wrote in another tweet<\/a>, \u201cNo one, of course, will come and steal the Statue of Liberty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Somewhere, the writer\u2019s room for the next installment in the Despicable Me franchise just got very loud.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe statue is yours. But what it embodies belongs to everyone,\u201d Glucksmann\u2019s social media clarification continued. \u201cAnd if the free world no longer interests your government, then we will take up the torch, here in Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Give me your tired, your poor, your\u2026international statuary catfights carried out over social media?
