Illustration of fast data transfer, streaming download and connectivity.\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tYou can download the whole of Wikipedia in one second (Credits: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Imagine if you could download the whole of <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/netflix\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix<\/a> in 16 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Well, that dream could soon be a reality after Japanese researchers broke the internet speed record.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have achieved a speed of 1.02 petabits per second \u2013 or 1,020,000 gigabits.<\/p>\n<p>That is 4,600,000 times faster than the UK\u2019s average internet speed of 223 megabits per second.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-2210177787-76b2.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23387141\" alt=\"Netflix on phone\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tYou could have the whole of Netflix downloaded in 16 seconds (Photo by Cheng Xin\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>They were able to reach this speed over a distance of 1,808 kilometres \u2013 breaking the world record set in October 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The team at <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/japan\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan<\/a>\u2019s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) reached the speeds using a new 19-core fiber cable.<\/p>\n<p>Their cable is so efficient it squeezes 19 separate light paths into the space typically used for one.<\/p>\n<p>The breakthrough offers a glimpse into the future of internet connectivity and super high download speeds.<\/p>\n<p>What it can achieve is staggering. <\/p>\n<p>You could stream 10 million ultra-HD 8K videos at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/SEI_258681332-c536.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23640471\" alt=\"The flow of data across a connected world.
