Metallica<\/a> have forced the US government to withdraw a social media video that made use of \u2018Enter Sandman\u2019 without authorisation.<\/p>\n

The Department of Defense sent out a post on X on Friday (July 11) that featured Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth promoting the country\u2019s military drone capabilities. The original version included the band\u2019s classic 1991 track, but it did not remain online for long.<\/p>\n

Metallica promptly issued a copyright notice, and the Department subsequently withdrew the video, posting a version without \u2018Enter Sandman\u2019 in its place.<\/p>\n

A Pentagon spokesperson said on Friday: \u201cThis afternoon, representatives from X reached out to DoD regarding a video posted to our social media page and asked that the video be removed due to a copyright issue with the song \u2018Enter Sandman\u2019 by Metallica. The video has been taken down, corrected, and re-uploaded to our page.\u201d<\/p>\n

Metallica confirmed to Rolling Stone<\/a> that the song had been used without their authorisation.<\/p>\n

The metal icons will be playing a string of stadium shows in the UK and Europe in 2026<\/a>, including dates in Dublin, Glasgow, Cardiff and London. They also appeared at Black Sabbath\u2019s \u2018Back To The Beginning\u2019 farewell show<\/a> last week, playing Sabbath\u2019s \u2018Hole In The Sky\u2019 and \u2018Johnny Blade\u2019.<\/p>\n

As for \u2018Enter Sandman\u2019, Dave Mustaine \u2013 a member of the band in the \u201880s and later the founder of Megadeth \u2013 recently claimed the song\u2019s riff was stolen from thrash group Excel<\/a>, and their song \u2018Tapping Into The Emotional Void\u2019.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0a four-star review of Metallica\u2019s \u2018M72\u2019 tour opener in Amsterdam<\/a>, NME wrote: \u201cMetallica have always been a gateway band for heavy music, but there\u2019s a renewed excitement around them now. Tonight\u2019s surprising, ambitious and giddy gig matches that energy at every turn.\u201d<\/p>\n
