{"id":261463,"date":"2025-07-13T11:34:23","date_gmt":"2025-07-13T11:34:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/261463\/"},"modified":"2025-07-13T11:34:23","modified_gmt":"2025-07-13T11:34:23","slug":"top-critic-praises-bristol-restaurant-thats-a-tiny-slice-of-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/261463\/","title":{"rendered":"Top critic praises Bristol restaurant that&#8217;s a &#8216;tiny slice of France&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Grace Dent &#8211; set to replace Gregg Wallace on MasterChef &#8211; says Bristol is &#8220;lucky to have it&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_JS366004937.jpg\" alt=\"New restaurant Lapin at Cargo 2, Wapping Wharf\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>New restaurant Lapin at Cargo 2, Wapping Wharf(Image: Paul Gillis\/Reach Plc)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A Guardian food critic, set to judge some of the nation&#8217;s best cooks on MasterChef, has offered her praise to a new restaurant at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink\/wapping-wharf-bristol-riviera-foodie-10318803\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol&#8217;s Wapping Wharf.<\/a> Grace Dent <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/food\/2025\/jul\/13\/lapin-bristol-grace-dent-restaurant-review?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">described Lupin<\/a> as &#8220;a peculiar, meta, slightly earnest, definitely delicious French restaurant that you would never, ever find in France \u2013 not least because no one in France would be seen dead eating in an old metal box.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, this is no slight or insult &#8211; her review shows she clearly admires what chef <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jrbriggs89\/?hl=en\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Jack Briggs-Horan<\/a> and restaurateur <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/doregan1\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Dan O\u2019Regan<\/a> have done with a &#8220;small, repurposed shipping container&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She notes how she&#8217;s previously written of Bristolians&#8217; love of delis and dining spots in former shipping containers, adding that with &#8220;a little imagination and clever sleight of hand, you can turn an impersonal iron box into a tiny slice of France&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1_Lapin3-Ed-Schofield.jpg\" alt=\"Lapin head chef Jack Briggs-Horan and co-owner Dan O'Regan\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Lapin head chef Jack Briggs-Horan and co-owner Dan O&#8217;Regan(Image: Ed Schofield)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Grace and her dining partner tried the asparagus with sauce gribiche and beurre noisette, the chicken schnitzel with oyster mushroom, chicken wing and madeira jus and St \u00c9milion au chocolat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She said she would, on the whole, recommend Lupin &#8220;because this is a menu that could thaw the iciest of hearts&#8221; and that Bristolians were &#8220;lucky to have it&#8221;. She added: &#8220;It\u2019s only early days, and they\u2019re still finding their feet, but mange tout, Rodders, mange tout.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">BristolPost&#8217;s own content editor Mark Taylor <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink\/go-back-hottest-new-bristol-10143496\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">reviewed Lapin in May this year<\/a>, noting it was already one of the city&#8217;s most talked about new openings after arriving in April. He explained that chef Jack and co-owner Dan had built up a bit of a cult following on the Bristol food scene in recent years thanks to their award-winning Bank restaurant in Totterdown.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_Lapin1-Ed-Schofield.jpg\" alt=\"Lapin has been busy since the day it opened\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Lapin has been busy since the day it opened(Image: Ed Schofield)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He recommended the &#8220;good value \u00a329 set menu&#8221; for lunch but returned for dinner to try the main \u00e0 la carte menu, with dishes at the time including the juicy confit duck leg (\u00a327) or a super-fresh skate wing (\u00a328).
