London Southend Airport is closed until further notice following a small plane crash today, Sunday, July 13.<\/p>\n

Emergency services were called after the aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from the Essex airport this afternoon.<\/p>\n

A cordon remains in place and people are being urged to avoid the area.<\/p>\n

There is currently no confirmation on casualties as a result of the incident, which saw a plume of black smoke rising from the wreckage of the crash.<\/p>\n

The airport is mainly used by easyJet flights to and from popular holiday destinations including Alicante, Gran Canaria and Malaga.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Sunday evening, a Southend Airport spokesperson said: “Due to a serious incident today London Southend Airport, we regret to advise that the airport is closed until further notice.<\/p>\n

“All flights to and from the airport have been cancelled while police, emergency services and air accident investigators are attending the incident.<\/p>\n

“We ask that any passengers due to travel tomorrow via London Southend contact their airline for information and advice.<\/p>\n

“Our thoughts are with those affected by today’s events and all passengers impacted by this disruption.<\/p>\n

“We will restart flights as soon as possible and will continue to update the public on developments.”<\/p>\n
