The bond market, an arena where brutality knows no bounds and where the participants take no prisoners.

Luke Yeaman, former deputy secretary of the Australian treasury and now the Commonwealth Bank’s chief economist, believes the US president will persist with his tariff policies and argues there are genuine underlying problems the new administration is trying to address.

Mr Yeaman says Mr Trump sees tariffs as the balm for a range of American economic ailments: fixing the budget and trade deficits, on-shoring industry and jobs, and improving national security.

“Is it going to work? I think it’s going to be very challenging,” he tells The Business.

“Achieving those goals is not easy, and the global economy is quite good at adjusting to changes in tariffs.

“That said, the US is a huge market. It’s still the largest consumer market globally, accounting for around 25 to 30 per cent of global demand.

“So, opportunities to avoid these tariffs are going to be quite limited compared to previous trade wars, but it’s clearly doing significant damage to the US economy in the meantime.”

Luke Yeaman is the new chief economist at the Commonwealth Bank, joining from the federal Treasury. Company owners say they are not getting enough support as they navigate soaring tariffs to send Chinese-made goods into the US.

Imposing tariffs is just one part of the program, Mr Das explains.

Another option being looked at is a radical overhaul of the bond markets, forcibly converting some or all of them to perpetual bonds or 100-year bonds with low coupon or interest rates.

Capital controls are also on the table, along with an idea to charge user fees for US Treasuries, representing a complete about-face in the way America has acted in the past half century.

“This is part of a plan, and the problem is we really don’t know how many bits of it are going to get actually implemented or when they’ll be implemented, because what we’ve seen is the whole process is entirely erratic,” he says.

“You know, people embrace the idea of creative destruction.
