Sheffield Wednesday are exploring the possibility of bringing Stuart Armstrong back to Hillsborough after his short-team deal with the Owls expired earlier this summer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Armstrong joined the Owls<\/a> in January after a brief stint with Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS, and made just six starts<\/a> before being released at the end of the campaign.<\/p>\n

Owner Dejphon Chansiri is under increasing pressure to resolve the club’s cash flow issues, with Wednesday unable to pay transfer fees until at least 2027<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 51-cap Scotland star made 214<\/a> appearances for Southampton, including 149<\/a> in the Premier League – after successful spells at Celtic and Dundee United, where he netted 49 goals<\/a> throughout his eight years north of the English border.<\/p>\n\n

Stuart Armstrong emerges as target for Sheffield Wednesday<\/p>\n

According to journalist Alan Nixon<\/a>, Sheffield Wednesday<\/a> are keen to bring Armstrong back to S6<\/a> after being forced to only sign free agents.<\/p>\n

Armstrong’s willingness to accept a pay-cut<\/a> is seen as crucial, but the chance to play a regular role in the second-tier next season and revive any hopes of international football could be the key.<\/p>\n

Reports also suggest that players are due around \u00a31.6m<\/a> for both May and June, with some being paid before others – this could perhaps be a worry in Armstrong’s mind when he weighs up where to go next.<\/p>\n

Given his advancing age though and lack of real playing time in 2025, there is a chance that Armstrong may accept a return to Hillsborough, given the fact that the Owls are heavily restricted on what kind of players they can bring in.<\/p>\n

The race for Armstrong’s signature is far from straightforward. Wrexham<\/a>, backed by high-profile owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, also want experienced Championship players to bolster their newly-promoted squad.<\/p>\n

As a result, the Welsh outfit<\/a> are reportedly<\/a> interested in the attacking midfielder, but are yet to formalise an offer.<\/p>\n

Reports<\/a> also say it’s likely that any prospective deal by Sheffield Wednesday will be on less favourable<\/a> terms than before, so there does lie a great chance of Wrexham being the ones to offer better terms – if they ever do.<\/p>\n

Wednesday’s best hope may be to move quickly and table an offer before their pre-season tour, and if they can settle outstanding wage and transfer arrears as soon as possible, it may very well help them beat Wrexham<\/a> to secure the re-signing of Armstrong.<\/p>\n
