An earthquake<\/a> with a magnitude of 5.4 hit southern Spain<\/a> on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

People in more than 50 towns, including tourist hotspot Malaga<\/a>, could feel the quake.<\/p>\n

“There was an incredible roar. It woke up my entire family and our neighbours in the complex.”<\/p>\n

Footage shared on social media showed streets turned into rivers, with floodwater swamping shopfronts and restaurants.<\/p>\n

Health minister Olga Pan\u00e9 said to Catalan News: \u201cWe have decided to evacuate and transfer the 71 patients to the hospitals of Sant Camil, Bellvitge, Igualada, Sant Boi, and Viladecans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weather warnings have been activated for 25 provinces, as the country prepares for severe storms in Huesca, Teruel and Zaragoza, Barcelona<\/a>, Girona<\/a>, Lleida and Tarragona, and Castell\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s everything we know about the earthquake so far:<\/p>\n

The earthquake was recorded by Spain\u2019s National Geographic at 7.13am on Monday. <\/p>\n

The earthquake struck off the coast of Almer\u00eda, southeast Spain, almost two miles below sea level.<\/p>\n

The impact was felt in more than 50 towns across seven provinces, most intensely in 17 municipalities in Almeria and parts of North Africa<\/a>, according to local reports.<\/p>\n

Malaga was hit the hardest, and areas such as Granada, Jaen, Murcia, Alicante and Albacete were also affected.<\/p>\n

How severe was the earthquake?<\/p>\n

The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.4, recorded as IV or V on the European Macroseismic Scale, which equates to “widely observed” to “strong”, according to the IGN. <\/p>\n

It was more powerful than the one that hit Lorca in 2011<\/a>, which resulted in nine deaths, including a pregnant woman. However, because this earthquake did not hit land, the destruction has been less severe.<\/p>\n

Earthquakes under 6.0 rarely cause serious damage to well-built structures.<\/p>\n

Andalusia emergency services received 25 calls from the public, according to El Pa\u00eds. However, no injuries have been reported so far.<\/p>\n

Still, buildings have been damaged across the region. Almeria\u2019s airport ceiling collapsed, causing tiles to hang from the ceiling in a cafe in the departures lounge.<\/p>\n

A worker told local news: \u201cWe heard some noises one after the other and then a loud bang and a great cloud of dust appeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a real scare for us.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were airport workers having their first coffee of the day but luckily no one was injured.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the ceiling of a Toyota showroom in Huercal de Almeria was also damaged by the earthquake.<\/p>\n

Is it safe to travel to Spain?<\/p>\n

The UK Foreign Office has not activated travel warnings for Spain following the floods or earthquake.<\/p>\n

However, it suggests that travellers should \u201ccheck weather warnings from Spain\u2019s meteorological office (AEMET) before travel and follow the advice of the local authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 hit southern Spain on Monday morning.
