And diet advice on which foods to avoid is often shared by online health gurus and influencers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But one trusted online doctor has shared one &#8216;deadly&#8217; food he describes as the &#8216;most fattening in the world&#8217;. Dr Eric Berg is a nutritionist and chiropractic doctor who specialises in intermittent fasting and dietary advice, which he regularly shares online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He often posts health tips to his 17 million YouTube followers and one million <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/tiktok\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"TikTokLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok<\/a> followers, and a recent video on his page tackles the health problems surrounding one particular type of sugar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Dr Berg said: &#8220;The number one most fattening ingredient in the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"worldLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">world<\/a> is not butter, it&#8217;s not fatty meat, it&#8217;s not even table sugar.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1744859349_225_consent-placeholder.svg.svg+xml\" alt=\"\" height=\"90px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Content cannot be displayed without consent<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">All three of these foods are known to be &#8216;fattening&#8217;, and Healthline agrees that while butter provides flavour and nutrients, consuming it in excess can lead to weight gain due to its high <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/eliminate-extreme-calorie-counting-weight-35050525\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"calorie Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">calorie <\/a>and saturated fat content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Excessive intake of butter, fatty meat or table sugar can contribute to weight gain and increase the risk of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/heart-disease\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"cardiovascular disease Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">cardiovascular disease <\/a>and diabetes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But none of these foods are the one Dr Berg claims to be the &#8216;world&#8217;s most fattening.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He continued: &#8220;The most fattening ingredient in the world is refined starch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The health expert went on to list some sources of refined starch, naming &#8220;modified food starch, modified corn starch, maltodextrin, tapioca flour, rice flour, potato flour, and wheat flour, which increases your <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/health\/three-berries-doctor-says-excellent-34351346\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"blood sugarLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">blood sugar<\/a> more than actual sugar.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_gettyimages-842797430-612x612.jpg\" alt=\"Refined starch\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Refined starch can be found in white bread, white rice, and many cereals(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Nutritional company Zoe explains that &#8216;refined starch&#8217; refers to starch that has undergone processing, often to remove some of its original components like fibre, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/vitamin-mineral-supplements-taken-millions-34180322\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"vitaminsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamins<\/a>, and minerals, resulting in a food that is lower in these nutrients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Dr Berg continued: &#8220;People consume at least 100 pounds of this food a year, you can eat a lot of it without even thinking twice, because it doesn&#8217;t satisfy you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;The main purpose of this food is to be a filler, it barely has any taste,<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;It&#8217;s not only a hidden carbohydrate, it&#8217;s a hidden deadly type of sugar, which is the primary reason why most people get fat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Healthline confirms that refined starch can contribute to weight gain and other <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"health issuesLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">health issues<\/a>, due to its high glycemic index and lack of essential nutrients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Refined starches, such as white bread, white rice and many cereals, are quickly digested which can lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">As Dr Berg explained, this can cause hunger and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/popular-salad-dressing-can-help-34980397\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"cravings, Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">cravings, <\/a>potentially leading to overeating and weight gain.
