US<\/a> president Donald Trump<\/a> has pledged to supply Ukraine<\/a> with advanced weapons via Nato<\/a> and to impose \u201cvery severe\u201d sanctions on Russia<\/a> if it fails to agree a deal to end its invasion within 50 days.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump said he was \u201cvery, very unhappy\u201d with Moscow\u2019s refusal to make peace with Kyiv and with repeated conversations with Russian president Vladimir Putin<\/a> that were \u201cvery pleasant \u2013 and then the missiles go off at night\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don\u2019t have a deal within 50 days,\u201d Mr Trump said in the White House on Monday alongside visiting Nato secretary general Mark Rutte. <\/p>\n

Presidential aides explained later that the tariffs would be imposed on Russia and countries that buy its oil exports \u2013 a major source of Kremlin revenue.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope we don\u2019t get to the point where we do (impose tariffs) but I\u2019ve been hearing so much talk,\u201d Mr Trump added. \u201cIt\u2019s all talk, and then missiles go into Kyiv and kill 60 people. It\u2019s got to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russia has launched its heaviest drone strikes of the three-year, full-scale war on Ukraine in recent weeks, coinciding with a US decision to halt \u2013 and then resume \u2013 deliveries of some vital equipment, including air defence ammunition.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve made a deal today where we are going to be sending them weapons, and they\u2019re going to be paying for them,\u201d Mr Trump said of fellow Nato members in Europe.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is billions of dollars\u2019 worth of military equipment which is going to be purchased from the United States, going to Nato, and that\u2019s going to be quickly distributed to the battlefield,\u201d he added, claiming that additional Patriot air defence systems would arrive in Ukraine \u201cvery soon\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump again blamed his Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, for allowing Russia to launch its all-out invasion of pro-western Ukraine in February 2022. He sought to thwart potential criticism from some supporters who wanted him to end military aid to Ukraine by framing the new deal as profitable business for the US.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe make the best equipment, the best missiles, the best of everything, the European nations know that … and they\u2019re going to be paying for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Rutte said the agreement would allow Ukraine to receive \u201creally massive numbers of military equipment\u201d. He urged Mr Putin to seek a negotiated peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo if I was Vladimir Putin today, and you\u2019re speaking about what you were planning to do in 50 days … I would reconsider whether I should not take negotiations about Ukraine more seriously than I was doing at the moment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump returned to power this year claiming to be able to stop Europe\u2019s biggest war since 1945 in one day. He said on Monday that he speaks to Mr Putin \u201ca lot\u201d and thought a peace deal was close on several occasions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d get home, I\u2019d say, \u2018First Lady, I had the most wonderful talk with Vladimir, I think we\u2019re finished\u2019. And then I\u2019ll turn on the television or she\u2019ll say to me one time, \u2018Well, that\u2019s strange, because they just bombed a nursing home\u2019,\u201d Mr Trump said.<\/p>\n

There was no immediate response from the Kremlin to Mr Trump\u2019s remarks, but earlier on Monday, Kirill Dmitriev, a Russian finance official prominent in talks between Moscow and Washington, said that \u201cconstructive dialogue between Russia and the US will always achieve more than the tired, destructive language of pressure\u201d.<\/p>\n
