{"id":26513,"date":"2025-04-17T03:54:18","date_gmt":"2025-04-17T03:54:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/26513\/"},"modified":"2025-04-17T03:54:18","modified_gmt":"2025-04-17T03:54:18","slug":"we-cant-have-anything-nice-incredulity-at-waterfront-and-bristol-cathedral-rooftop-view-row","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/26513\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;We can&#8217;t have anything nice&#8217; &#8211; incredulity at waterfront and Bristol Cathedral rooftop view row"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A glimpse of the cathedral from one of the historic dock buildings will be impaired<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">People in Bristol have expressed incredulity at the city\u2019s planners, after <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/harbourside-rooftop-terrace-faces-rejection-10106333\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Bristol Live revealed a projectLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol Live revealed a project<\/a> to create a rooftop terrace on one of the historic dock buildings was being opposed by planning officers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The owner of the V-Shed, the building that currently houses four harbourside bars and restaurants at the heart of the Floating Harbour, wants to create a rooftop terrace for each of the bars which will allow people to access the stunning views of the waterfront and Bristol Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But Historic England and the council\u2019s own heritage department <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/harbourside-rooftop-terrace-faces-rejection-10106333\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"are opposing the ideaLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">are opposing the idea<\/a>, because the terrace\u2019s pergola shelter will partially block a view of the very top part of the cathedral from a specific spot on the other side of St Augustine\u2019s Reach.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_TCBR140425RooftopBRI_02jpeg.jpg\" alt=\"Steve Davis, the boss of Padmanor Investments, the company that owns the V-Shed building, unveils plans for a rooftop terrace bar on top of the V-Shed building at Bristol's Floating Harbour\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Steve Davis, the boss of Padmanor Investments, the company that owns the V-Shed building, unveils plans for a rooftop terrace bar on top of the V-Shed building at Bristol&#8217;s Floating Harbour(Image: Conversation PR)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They say the glimpse of the top of the cathedral\u2019s tower over the roof of the V-Shed building from the corner of Narrow Quay by the Arnolfini is one of the most important in Bristol and should be protected, even though opening up a rooftop terrace on the roof of the V-Shed itself will give new and better views of the cathedral for people up there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The plan is set to go before councillors on April 30 and developers have been told <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/harbourside-rooftop-terrace-faces-rejection-10106333\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"it will be recommended for refusalLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">it will be recommended for refusal<\/a> because of the partial impact on the \u2018heritage view\u2019 from the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">People in Bristol have reacted with bemusement, particularly because the city council\u2019s planning department has given permission for a series of tall buildings all over the city centre that have filled the skyline from around the city and obscured the views of historic buildings like the cathedral, Cabot Tower and the Wills Memorial building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Melissa Topping, from Redfield, pointed out the apparent double-standard. \u201cIt&#8217;s OK to have all the ugly student blocks going up blocking our view of four beautiful church spires and gorgeous rooftops, that we used to have, from the top of the hill in east Bristol?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Aman Khan added: \u201cWith everything that\u2019s been done to this area over the past 40 years, there\u2019s nothing wrong with this idea.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cAnyone who wants a look at the Cathedral can stroll over and have plain sight of it. The bars would be well-patronised and ensure the economic future of a well-loved area of the city,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Yvonne Lambert was equally scathing. &#8220;We need more spaces that are elevated for drinking,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She added: \u201cNot even full swing of summer, and it\u2019s been crazy trying to find a place to drink that isn\u2019t fully booked. People deserve better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Not all this bus gate nonsense and clean air rubbish. We need more drinking places with views.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_TCBR140425RooftopBRI_09.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of the proposed new roof terrace on top of the V-Shed building at Bristol's Floating Harbour\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Illustration of the proposed new roof terrace on top of the V-Shed building at Bristol&#8217;s Floating Harbour(Image: Conversation PR)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Paul Mizen responded to the Bristol Live article by pointing out the precedent of development around the Floating Harbour that obscures the cathedral has already been set. \u201cWhen they allowed a cafe to be built on the waterfront at Canons Marsh, which completely obstructed the views of the Cathedral, a precedent was set,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI\u2019m not always in favour of developments that obscure views, as with much of the centre of the city, but this seems minor compared to many,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One X user (formerly known as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/twitter\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>) summed up the response.
