{"id":265255,"date":"2025-07-14T21:30:37","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T21:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/265255\/"},"modified":"2025-07-14T21:30:37","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T21:30:37","slug":"when-should-you-take-blood-pressure-medicine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/265255\/","title":{"rendered":"When Should You Take Blood Pressure Medicine?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For some people with <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/high-blood-pressure\/guide\/\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high blood pressure<\/a>, taking their medications at night may provide better blood pressure control than\u00a0<a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/hypertension\/treating\/tips\/remember-your-blood-pressure-meds.aspx\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">taking the same medication<\/a> in the morning, according to new research published in JAMA Network Open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[1]<\/p>\n<p>The study author Xiaoping Chen, MD, a professor of cardiology at the West China Hospital of Sichuan University, says that the main finding \u2014 a 3 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) greater reduction in nighttime systolic blood pressure \u2014 may lower the risk of a <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/heart-attack\/guide\/\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heart attack<\/a> or stroke, though more evidence is needed to build on the results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsidering that a 2 to 5 mmHg reduction in office systolic blood pressure reading is associated with a 7 to 10 percent reduction in the risk of <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/heart-disease\/guide\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cardiovascular events<\/a>, we hypothesize that this difference in nighttime systolic blood pressure observed between bedtime and morning dosing groups may potentially lower the long-term cardiovascular risk,\u201d Dr. Chen says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[2]<\/p>\n<p>What Is Hypertension?High blood pressure, or <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/hypertension\/understanding\/types-of-hypertension.aspx\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hypertension<\/a>, happens when the force of your blood pushing against the walls of the arteries is too high \u2014 a major risk factor for developing heart disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[3]<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Systolic pressure (the top number in a <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/heart-health\/blood-pressure-chart-what-your-numbers-mean\/\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blood pressure reading<\/a>) measures this force in millimeters of mercury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[4]<\/p>\n<p>The goal of <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/hypertension\/preventing.aspx\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hypertension<\/a> treatment is to reduce systolic blood pressure, in order to lower the risk of heart complications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[5]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLowering blood pressure can lower the strain on blood vessels and the heart,\u201d says <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/medicine.duke.edu\/profile\/nishant-shah\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Nishant Shah, MD<\/a>, an associate professor of medicine at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina, who has conducted research in cardiovascular disease prevention but was not involved in the new study. \u201cHaving <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/dementia\/for-better-brain-health-bring-down-your-blood-pressure\/\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high blood pressure<\/a> can also damage blood vessels and cause plaque buildup that obstructs blood flow to the heart and brain \u2014 leading to heart attacks and strokes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why Might Blood Pressure Medication Timing Matter?Existing evidence is mixed on whether hypertension medication timing makes a difference in <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/hypertension\/managing\/home-testing-kits.aspx\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blood pressure<\/a> and heart health outcomes. The latest findings add to a body of research that suggests taking blood pressure medication at night may offer more benefits than taking it in the morning \u2014 though other studies have concluded that timing doesn\u2019t have a significant impact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[6]<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[7]<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[8]<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[9]<\/p>\n<p>In most healthy adults, <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/hypertension\/what-your-blood-pressure-says-about-you.aspx\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blood pressure<\/a> follows a 24-hour circadian rhythm (or internal body clock), in which it noticeably dips by 10 to 20 percent during sleeping hours, increases upon waking, then fluctuates throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[10]<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0With this <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/sleep\/everything-you-need-know-about-your-circadian-rhythm\/\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">circadian rhythm<\/a> pattern in mind, researchers have been examining whether achieving better control of blood pressure overnight could be a more accurate predictor of heart health complications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[11]<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[12]<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe question is whether lowering nighttime blood pressure is advantageous over lowering daytime blood pressure. Clinical evidence for this benefit is missing \u2014 or at least highly debated,\u201d says <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/researchers.cedars-sinai.edu\/Florian.Rader\/about\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Florian Rader, MD<\/a>, a professor of cardiology and the medical director at Cedars-Sinai Hypertension Center in Beverly Hills, California, who also was not involved in the new research.<\/p>\n<p>Importance of a Consistent Hypertension Treatment Plan<\/p>\n<p>To investigate the timing of blood pressure medications, researchers recruited more than 700 people with high blood pressure from 15 hospitals in China. The participants were about 56 years old on average, and they were randomly split into two groups: one group took their medication in the morning, and the other at night.<\/p>\n<p>After monitoring participants over 12 weeks, researchers found that people who took their blood pressure medication at bedtime had significantly better reductions in nighttime systolic blood pressure and improved circadian rhythms than participants who took their medication in the morning \u2014 without triggering unwanted side effects, like <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/hypertension\/when-is-low-blood-pressure-too-low\/\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">excessively low blood nighttime pressure<\/a>, or interfering with daytime and 24-hour blood pressure levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[1]<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/profiles.mountsinai.org\/omar-al-dhaybi\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Omar Al Dhaybi, MD<\/a>, the director of cardiology hypertension at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital in New York City, says this combination medication is commonly prescribed in the United States to treat hypertension.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is considered to be one of the better medications, and works very well in reducing blood pressure, since both drugs are long-acting and would cover the patient for the 24-hour period,\u201d says Dr. Al Dhaybi, adding that combination therapy is one of the recommended strategies to help patients take their hypertension medication consistently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[14]<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[15]<\/p>\n<p>Current U.S. hypertension treatment guidelines don\u2019t specify exactly when people should take their blood pressure medication, as blood pressure management generally follows a personalized approach. This is why experts underscore the importance of speaking to your healthcare provider before adjusting medication timing or dosage on your own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[16]<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[17]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some hypertension medications that are better taken in the morning for various reasons, and some medications may be better taken in the evening due to possible side effects that are more well-tolerated at night,\u201d says <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/utswmed.org\/doctors\/shawna-nesbitt\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Shawna D. Nesbitt, MD<\/a>, an expert with the American Heart Association (AHA) and the John C. Vanatta III Professor of Internal Medicine-Hypertension at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, who was not involved in the JAMA study. \u201cIn addition, drug interactions with other medications you\u2019re taking is an important factor to consider as you determine dosing times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Future of Hypertension Treatment Research<\/p>\n<p>The study authors acknowledge that there are several study limitations that would require additional research to confirm.<\/p>\n<p>For example, because the trial included only Chinese participants who were not diagnosed with <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/heart-disease\/guide\/\" data-component-name=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heart disease<\/a>, Dr. Shah says the findings are not definitively generalizable to other populations. \u201cThere could be environmental or cultural factors playing a role in the results,\u201d he explains.
