{"id":265393,"date":"2025-07-14T23:04:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T23:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/265393\/"},"modified":"2025-07-14T23:04:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T23:04:11","slug":"eu-to-hit-us-aircraft-cars-and-food-in-latest-retaliatory-strike-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/265393\/","title":{"rendered":"EU to hit US aircraft, cars and food in latest retaliatory strike\u00a0 \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Then comes machinery, followed by cars and car parts; chemicals and plastics; medical devices and equipment; electrical equipment; and industrial goods \u2014\u00a0all of which fall into multibillion-euro categories.<\/p>\n<p>The total figure is down from an earlier proposal to impose retaliatory tariffs on \u20ac95 billion of U.S. goods.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission presented the new hit list on Monday after Trump dramatically raised the trade stakes last weekend by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/donald-trump-hits-eu-with-sweeping-30-percent-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threatening to impose a 30 percent blanket tariff<\/a> on EU exports from Aug. 1 if no trade deal is reached.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission also explains to EU countries that its rationale for targeting U.S. products is based on several criteria, according to the document.<\/p>\n<p>First, it states, there is a \u201cneed to rebalance\/level the playing field in light of the U.S. tariffs affecting EU exports to the U.S.\u201d It then takes into account whether there is \u201cavailability of alternative sources of supply from outside or inside the EU.\u201d Finally, it includes \u201cproducts where the risk of relocation is high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EU member countries would have to formally approve the measures for them to take effect. A vote hasn\u2019t yet been called after the bloc\u2019s trade ministers met earlier on Monday and <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/201898\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">backed the Commission\u2019s negotiating strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union is meanwhile trying to strike a careful balance between folding and fighting back against Trump\u2019s latest tariff threats.
