{"id":266762,"date":"2025-07-16T14:00:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T14:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/266762\/"},"modified":"2025-07-16T14:00:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T14:00:10","slug":"germany-requests-us-long-range-weapons-as-bridge-to-european-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/266762\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany requests US long-range weapons as bridge to European tech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">COLOGNE, Germany \u2014 The German government this week notified Pentagon leaders of an interest to buy the U.S. Army\u2019s Typhon missile launcher system, which can fire missiles with a range of 2,000 kilometers, while a European initiative to make such weapons continues to ripen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Interest in the Lockheed Martin-made launcher comes as defense officials in Berlin await a final call by the Trump administration to honor a Biden-era agreement under which American missiles are to bolster Germany\u2019s deterrence posture starting in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Those long-range fires capabilities, launched via Typhon, are to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2024\/07\/10\/us-to-send-tomahawks-hypersonics-other-long-range-fires-to-germany\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2024\/07\/10\/us-to-send-tomahawks-hypersonics-other-long-range-fires-to-germany\/\">include SM-6 and Tomahawk missiles<\/a>, plus \u201cdevelopmental hypersonic weapons,\u201d said a July 2024 German-U.S. statement, released on the sidelines of NATO\u2019s 75-year anniversary summit in Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Boris Pistorius, speaking to reporters in Washington on July 14, said missile-stationing plan\u2019s fate was still iffy, as U.S. defense leaders re-assess the American military footprint in Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m very confident that the announcement will remain in place,\u201d he said following a meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. \u201cBut a final decision is still outstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">In that context, Berlin\u2019s interest in Typhon could be seen as a gesture to keep the long-range strike plan, devised as a conventional counterstrike option in the event of a Russian attack, on track in the first place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Either way, European nations currently lack the weapons range that Typhon would bring to the continent, according to Pistorius.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Countries have banded together to develop such weapons under the European Long-range Strike Approach, or ELSA, but those capabilities will take seven to 10 years to field, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__BioWrapper-sc-cy7r53-0 eATlTY a-body2\">Sebastian Sprenger is associate editor for Europe at Defense News, reporting on the state of the defense market in the region, and on U.S.-Europe cooperation and multi-national investments in defense and global security.
