{"id":266897,"date":"2025-07-16T15:18:02","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T15:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/266897\/"},"modified":"2025-07-16T15:18:02","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T15:18:02","slug":"date-set-for-historic-greater-manchester-building-regeneration-to-be-completed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/266897\/","title":{"rendered":"Date set for historic Greater Manchester building regeneration &#8216;to be completed&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The building has been closed since 2015<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/3_JS348138542jp.jpg\" alt=\"GVs of Ashton Under Lyne in Tameside . 11 October 2024\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Ashton- under-Lyne in Tameside(Image: Sean Hansford)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The regeneration of the historic Ashton Town Hall will be completed by 2030, council bosses have vowed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Grade-II listed building on Market Square, which opened in 1840, was closed in 2015 &#8211; and has been sealed off and surrounded by scaffolding since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Recently \u00a33.4m worth of works restructuring the fa\u00e7ade were completed, but there is still work to be done to bring the building back to its former glory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The latest structural works were done to ensure the town hall doesn\u2019t deteriorate any further.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Sign up to the MEN Politics newsletter Due North <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=e29ee8c7-06ed-4603-a342-72fd4cc91649&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"hereLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Inside the building has gone to rack and ruin, with previous council reports revealing \u2018significant damage\u2019 occurred when the physical link between the town hall and the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/tameside\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Tameside<\/a> Administrative Centre (TAC) was disconnected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The building houses Civic Hall, which contains the former council chamber. Currently full council meetings take place at Dukinfield Town Hall and previously Guardsman Tony Downes House in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/droylsden\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Droylsden<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_Construction-ashton.jpg\" alt=\"Construction site on Market Square, in the heart of Ashton town centre \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Construction site on Market Square, in the heart of Ashton town centre (Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Speaking at the latest council meeting in Dukinfield Town Hall, council leader Eleanor Wills said: \u201cWe pledge to restore <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/ashton-and-mossley\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashton<\/a> Town Hall, not merely as a heritage building, but as a civic symbol reborn. The heart of Ashton will beat anew with a town hall that doesn\u2019t just belong to the past, but leads the future. This isn\u2019t regeneration for nostalgia sake, it\u2019s regeneration for identity sake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cLet this be a civic home that hosts possibility and a landmark where our borough\u2019s character shines through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This project has been funded by a cash injection of \u00a320m from the Levelling Up fund, secured by the council in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Join our Manc Life WhatsApp group <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/chat.whatsapp.com\/KfTmjBfYQVuE2KHTPAQMIj\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HERELink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The town hall regeneration was one of Tameside council bosses\u2019 three big pledges for the borough&#8217;s future. The second was \u2018homes for all\u2019, which essentially sets out a minimum requirement for new housing developments to have 20 per cent affordable housing included.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Affordable homes are houses that cost less than 80 per cent of the market rate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The third pledge outlined at the meeting on July 15 was \u2018a borough in motion\u2019.
