{"id":266969,"date":"2025-07-16T16:03:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T16:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/266969\/"},"modified":"2025-07-16T16:03:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T16:03:12","slug":"barriers-to-mental-health-support-in-gwent-outlined","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/266969\/","title":{"rendered":"Barriers to mental health support in Gwent outlined"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Staff from mental health charity Mind, which works across Gwent, outlined a number of \u201cbarriers\u201d facing people experiencing mental ill-health to members of Monmouthshire County Council\u2019s public services committee.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Jamie Devlin, head of housing and tenancy support for the charity, said: \u201cWe currently work with 342 people a week and can see them for up to two years and come across barriers where one service, such as social services, will say we can\u2019t see them because they are using illegal substances.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cHowever it is chicken and egg, are they using substances because of poor mental health or are they having poor mental health because of the substances? And while those questions are being asked people are being, I don\u2019t want to say failed, but are not being supported when they need to be.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Devlin said since the pandemic the service has no longer been able to refer people to the community mental health team \u201ceven potentially in psychosis\u201d and instead they must see their GP who will make an assessment and a referral for the mental health team.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  His colleague Megan Escott said she had asked clients for examples of \u201cbarriers when feeling suicidal to getting help\u201d.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwalesargus.co.uk\/admin\/?article_id=25304930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;We are a chubby community&#8217;, locals respond after famous \u2018gymfluencer&#8217; slams town<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwalesargus.co.uk\/admin\/?article_id=25310895\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Welsh Ambulance Service to lead study on emergency video consultation\u00a0<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwalesargus.co.uk\/admin\/?article_id=25301607\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cafe owner praises customers for supporting her recovery after heart attack<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  As well as clients being denied support due to substance use she said some then found they couldn\u2019t get help to stop using drugs or alcohol: \u201cThey are told \u2018we can\u2019t help you because that substance is what is keeping you alive\u2019.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She said some also had concerns about group therapy which has re-traumatised them listening to other people\u2019s stories while others don\u2019t like taking medication and fear being shut off from support if they raise their concerns. Others have waited two years for trauma therapy and then been told they aren\u2019t eligible as they would be unable to cope with the treatment.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She said \u201cmore communication\u201d with clients about what to expect would be good.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Dr Liz Andrew, who briefed the committee on mental health services provided by Gwent\u2019s Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, including for those at risk of suicide, thanked Mr Devlin for his comments.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She said she didn\u2019t \u201crecognise\u201d his experience of contacting the mental health team but would look into them and said they will also be included in a review of referral pathways.
