Billy Joel fans still bummed about the five-time<\/a> Grammy winner canceling all of his upcoming shows<\/a>, including a Friday night concert at Yankee Stadium with Rod Stewart, can rest assured the Piano Man is trying to get better following his recent diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Susan Lacy, one of the two directors behind the HBO Max documentary \u201cBilly Joel: And So It Goes,\u201d<\/a> told \u201cGood Morning America\u201d the 76-year-old singer is battling back from the buildup of fluid in his brain that forced him to stop performing.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s doing physical therapy, he\u2019s healing, he\u2019s working on getting better<\/a>,\u201d Lacy said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Joel was also slated to perform at MetLife Stadium on Aug. 8, followed by a Citi Field show on Aug. 21. Stevie Nicks and Sting, respectively, planned to join him.<\/p>\n

In announcing the cancellations in May, the \u201cNew York State of Mind\u201d hitmaker said his medical condition was impacting his \u201chearing, vision and balance.\u201d Doctors told Joel to cut out the live shows while he\u2019s on the mend.<\/p>\n

The first installment of Lacy\u2019s documentary airs on HBO Max Friday<\/a>, when Joel was booked<\/a> to play in his birthplace \u2014 the Bronx \u2014 while the Yankees are in Atlanta. Part two airs July 25.<\/p>\n

The film\u2019s co-director, Jessica Levin, told GMA the documentary takes a deep dive into Joel\u2019s upbringing and how music helped him survive<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis mother knew that Billy had a gift, and she made sure he had those piano lessons,\u201d Levin said.<\/p>\n

Joel famously wrapped up his decade-long monthly\u00a0residency<\/a> at Madison Square Garden on July 25 of last year. He was joined onstage by singer AXL Rose and musical funnyman Jimmy Fallon.<\/p>\n

Joel last performed at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut in February, where he fell to the ground<\/a> after an electric rendition of his 1980 classic \u201cIt\u2019s Still Rock and Roll to Me.\u201d It\u2019s unclear if his medical condition contributed to that tumble.<\/p>\n

Also unknown is if or when Joel will\u00a0next take the stage.
