The policy guarantees an annual increase to the state pension to match whatever is highest out of inflation, wage growth or 2.5%.<\/p>\n
It comes amid growing discussion over the future of the triple lock, with a number of leading economists claiming it will become unaffordable.<\/p>\n
Labour has committed to the policy up to the end of this Parliament, but the future beyond then is less certain.<\/p>\n
Starmer was asked at Prime Minister’s Questions what his view of someone on modest income was.<\/p>\n
He then set out the ways his Government has supported working people and pensioners.<\/p>\n
The PM said: “I think of the working people across this country who put in every day and don’t get back what they deserve.<\/p>\n
“That’s who we’re working for, that’s who we’re fixing the country (for), the sort of people that work hard but haven’t necessarily got the savings to buy themselves out of problems.<\/p>\n
“That’s who we’re working for. That’s why we put the National Living Wage up, that’s an extra \u00a31,400.<\/p>\n
“The national minimum wage up, that’s \u00a32,500 a year.<\/p>\n
“The triple lock, that went up – pensions up \u00a3470.<\/p>\n
“And of course, we’re extending childcare, opening free breakfast clubs and free school meals.<\/p>\n
